Irish National Foresters Society (INF)
The INF were founded in Dublin in 1877 to bring together all Irishmen, irrespective of class or creed, to assist families in sickness and financial distress. The benevolent society was synonymous with the Irish national cause, with members parading in uniform at Wolfe Tone ceremonies in Bodenstown and during the funeral of the Fenian O'Donovan Rossa. The early 1900s were a time of great illness and death leading to increased membership in Ireland, Scotland, and Australia. There are still branches in existence, but the majority ceased operation with the arrival of an improved health and social welfare system.
"Irish born man
If you're to Ireland true
We heed not race, nor creed nor clan
We've heart and hand for you."
(Banner of the Ballybay branch of the INF in Monaghan County Museum)
