Williams. Fraoch
8/10

Not seen in the Wetherspoon estate for about 2½ years where Martin gave it 7½/10.
This is one of the few golden ales I actually like.
Faint traces of honey and ginger do the business for me.
It's just so easy drinking.
Ideal for that summer beer garden.
Now, where did the sun go.🫥

Lured over to Edinburgh for some rugby league action.
Now before any of you get all chatty about rugby league, stop, because my interest is minimal!

Anyways, just round the corner is the Corstorphine Wetherspoons DESPITE it only having a raft of blonde and hoppy guest ales on offer.🤨
Fortunately, I can report that the Abbot is as fresh as I've found it in any Spoons of late.

Meanwhile, over on the CAMRA Discourse discussion forum, a huge chasm develops over blonde and hoppy v bitter and even darker beers.
Such discussion can be found in their virtual local forum.
First, of course, you have to find the CAMRA Discourse discussion forum.
Good luck with that!
Regular viewers of this page will know where I stand!

WHERE DO YOU STAND?

I maybe don't mention CAMRA as often as I should.🤔

For the CAMRA members amongst you, their scoring system will change from 01 Jun this year.
You may not have heard about this change, moreso if you've opted out of communications from them.
It's meant to simplify things and make the whole process more attractive to new and existing scorers.
More importantly, its the basis on which pubs are selected for their annual Good Beer Guide publication.

It's certainly more simpler than my marks out of 10🤔, but whereas you used to be able to award half marks on their 1 to 5 scale with 11 variables, you are now limited to 6 variables (0 to 5).
I wish them well and if it does increase the number of scorers they'll have achieved their objective.

Hanlons Port Stout
8/10

I thought we had reviewed this beer previously - but not so.
This was in really good condition.
Port added, rather than brewed in large Port barrels I'm assuming.🤔
Although, the pump clip merely mentions "hints" of chocolate, coffee and port.🧐

The Port certainly subdues the other two characteristics and makes it very moreish.

Rudgate Ruby Mild
8/10

Gave this ale 9/10, 7 years ago at the Haystook.
This ale has just went on here at the new Spoon franchise beside the old Glasgow Zoo ground.
Guest ales should be £3.45 but they're on managers special at £1.99 for reasons best known to the manager.🤔
The Old Hooky pictured was coming soon...

A very pleasant and moreish mild.
Oh? I should add that I've had a few sips before taking the picture...

Batemans ###B
7/10

3 years since this brew graced a Scottish Spoons where it was worthy of 8½.
That was in Prestwick where the manager ensures ales are served as best as they can be.

This ale has been on since Monday at least and is still sort of fresh(ish) but not worthy of 8½.

A bit of a two for one post.

One brewery. Two very similar beers.

MòR Beers based just outside of Dundee don't get seen a lot around the Wetherspoons pub estate. They are quite small but it's always a pleasure to enjoy their ales.

Much like my namesake I enjoy their Green Lady the best.

These two beers were really enjoyable.

Served at The Henglers Circus on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow.

First up.

MòR Out Of Scope III Session Pale. 4.1% ABV.

Almost clear in appearance.

Not much of a head on it.

The aroma. Nice and citrusy. Stone fruit.

Taste light and refreshing with a nice hop flavour from the Amarillo and Vic Secret Hops.

7/10

MòR Circles Citrus Pale. 4.6% ABV.

Again another almost clear bright ale.

Slightly better head.

A smoother ale on the mouthfeel.

I love New Zealand hops which is in this beer. Tropical fruit notes. Juicy with good hop bitterness.

Maxim Maximus
8/10

Another welcome return for a classic beer from a brewery of fine standing.
Obviously, you shouldn't drink too many, but it is fiendishly moreish, so much so I'm having another pint with a meal.
Ordered thru the app, I just hope they're not bringing me out a jug (with dimples!).🫣

Theakston XB
8½/10

I'd always considered this the bitter to Old Peculiar's best bitter status, Old P lite in effect.
However, this fine offering from the CP is in top form and unlike previous real ale offerings from the CP, it's not over chilled.
The faintest hint of caramel balances this beer to almost perfection.

In my not so humble opinion this is what ale should taste like, if only from a base point of view.
I could get plastered on this today in celebration of a good friend who has just passed away this morning but will obviously be sensible and responsible.🥹

RIP Hughie.
