FACES OF EXETER PHOENIX — AMBER

We sat down with Amber on the terrace at the Cafe Bar for a chat.

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO EXETER PHOENIX?
I’ve come to meet my friend David, who works here. He always tells me when there’s good stuff on and I come to a lot of gigs and art events.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My main passion is music but I also freelance as a model, mainly fantasy and medieval modelling. I’ve just come back from a medieval festival in Glastonbury celebrating spring, which I’m looking forward to after what feels like a long winter.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MODELLING?
A friend’s mum who worked in wedding events asked me to model for a mermaid shoot in Cornwall. Then someone introduced me to PurplePort and that started everything. It feels like escapism. I love becoming different characters and it feels very freeing.

THE MODELLING INDUSTRY DOES NOT HAVE A GREAT REPUTATION FOR YOUNG WOMEN. WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN?
I had an eating disorder when I was 19. It was very serious and I nearly died. I do think pressures around image played a part. Recovery changed how I see myself and life. Now I value authenticity over appearance. Fantasy modelling does not require you to fit one narrow standard.

I also worked in high fashion, including London Fashion Week, but that is not where my heart is.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE DOING?
I write music, sing and play guitar. My debut single Riding Around was played on BBC Introducing. I made it in my bedroom during lockdown.

DID YOU PRODUCE IT YOURSELF?
No, I collaborated with a producer, Dame, from Kansas after he reached out online. We have worked together for years even though we have never met in person. I have played a few gigs including the Glastonbury small stage.

I would love to be in a band one day. I do not want to write just for hits. I want my music to be authentic.

WHAT MAKES YOU SO BRAVE?
Going through my illness made me realise I had been given a second chance at life. After that I decided to go for things. What is the worst that can happen? Someone says no or yes.
