It's the end of an era at The Red Lion, as Chantell prepares to move on to pastures new in July. I am — we all are — thrilled for her progression, but commensurately sad to be losing a key part of our little corner of Market Place.
Chantell has been a fixture here for the best part of ten years, first sitting in the corner doing her homework, then moving behind the bar under Gerald & Glenda's tutelage, before taking the helm as manager. We wouldn't be where we are today without her; she has been a formative and fundamental part of the community-focused (and award-winning!) pub we all love.
It would be mad to pretend that every moment in hospitality is easy, but together we've handled all sorts of problems, drama, big ideas, small attention to detail, and everything in between. We've laughed, cried, shared the occasional tequila, and have watched something bigger and better than either of us could ever imagine unfold before our eyes.
Not to mention the impressive unflappability as I wander into the pub: "guess what I've found in a charity shop?" (or worse, a reclamation yard), and "I've had an idea...", or "Oh, yes, I forgot to tell you...". Not to mention the smile which has greeted locals and tourists alike, making everyone feel welcome, whether they're daily visitors or walking through the door for the first time.
This has all been new to me; I'd never run a pub (and not worked in one for 20+ years) before I took over The Red Lion. Chantell and I have both learned, succeeded, and occasionally failed together, but always together. I'd like to think she's picked up a few things from me, but I am certain I've learned a lot from her.
Chantell will still be a familiar face in the pub, now though as a friend & customer (and occasional artist). There will also be a farewell party in July... watch this space!
Cheers, Chantell, and from every single one of us at the pub, all the very best — it's been an absolute pleasure.
