The energy crisis is all linked to decisions made in 1986. The Conservatives sold off all our public energy assets. Then Labour changed the regulator in 2000. The result is out of control price rises and massive profits for the shareholders. At least one political party offers the answer.

Why are Scottish households and small businesses paying the price for burning gas in power stations in England when over 97.5% of Scotland electricity needs ...

Can't believe it's been 2 years since I closed the Village Inn due to Covid19. Having seen a number of regulars and being asked what am I doing now? Well I am standing in the next Council Election for the as a Councillor for Sighthill/Gorgie ward. Focused on helping tackle poverty and supporting families. I will be looking to get our roads fixed not patched and the cycle lane bollards removed and a safe cycle route established.

Edinburgh deserves better and I will help deliver it. If elected I plan to host a surgery every fortnight within the ward as many of you will know I don't take no for an answer. Vote David Henry No.1 on the 5th of May.

I know it was sometime ago when I was asked to look into the issue of grants for private hire and taxi operators. I have now received a written reply from the Scottish Government. In short most of those who claimed should receive the grant.

It can be downloaded from here:

Although not exactly Village Inn business as I am very much involved in politics, I have written to both my MSP and to the Scottish Finance Minister about a problem that has been brought to my attention that seems to affect many licensed taxi drivers both black cab and private hire. I have asked for the details of the grant scheme to be looked at and confirm if receiving Universal Credit while be registered as Self Employed should exclude a claimant or if HMRC Self Employed registered means that they should still qualify for the grant?

Here is what I have written when I get a reply I will post an update. Hope everyone is staying safe? Regards David Henry

Dear ######

I am sure you will have received a number of complaints from constituents by now on the above announced grant scheme?

I have CC'ed our minister who announced the grant scheme recently. Turns out thousands of taxi license holders who have had little support if self employed or newly self employed had been told to sign up for Universal Credit. I have heard from an ex patron of the Village Inn, who tells me he receives just £290 per month from Universal Credit and has to fill in online what he earns from the private hire taxi. So any income is deducted from Universal Credit.

I understand that thousands of taxi licensed drivers are now being told that they do not qualify if they already receive Universal Credit. This must be an error as at the end of the tax year the grant will be taxable. If a taxi license holder is registered with HMRC as self-employed then all the income will be taxable surely?

Can you please chase this situation up before the damage to the party is seized on by our opponents? Plus just in case Kate does read this all money put into the taxi drivers hands will end back in the economy.
