Inspired by our time spent living, working and travelling in Melbourne, New York, San Francisco and all over Europe we want to bring the best of what we experienced and enjoyed to Edinburgh. S & G is a space where the focus is on what we consider to be the simpler pleasures in life; exceptional food and w**e; brilliant music; engaging literature. And, most importantly, good company. The focus will be on pairing artisan cheeses with suitably matched w**es. We will be offering regularly changing cheese and w**e flights showcasing the best seasonal cheeses alongside what w**e we have been enjoying that month! As well as cheese we will have a fabulous selection of charcuterie, amazing grilled cheese sourdough, homemade sausage rolls and other tasty morsels. In isolation all are good – together we think they are the basis for enjoying life.

This month we celebrate #10, and we’re doing so with a nod to a familiar theme here in the club. How does regional music become an international phenomenon?

What is the alchemy involved? We saw this in Buena Vista Social Club (Cuba) and Graceland (South Africa). Now we’re off to Jamaica, back in time to 1973 to meet the Wailers, a band that had been struggling for success and a breakthrough for a decade and found themselves broke and stuck in London. A chance meeting with a white Jamaican label owner leads them to a Faustian choice: He’ll change their sound and introduce them to an international rock audience, but the cost will be their friendship, their band, and more.

This record is revolutionary, danceable, and full of love. It launched Bob Marley into the stratosphere, and it marked a crossroads for reggae in both sound and spirit.

And the best bit is not only are we hosting this in Portobello, but we are launching it in Stockbridge S&G for the first time too ✌🏼

Portobello Vs Stockbridge

This August we dedicated our flights to showcasing the abundance of talent and passion in our team. No rules, no criteria - the team had complete free-rein to simply choose whatever w**e they wanted to put in the spotlight.

So six of the team have chosen their perfect summer w**e & their favourite paired cheese & they’ve written their own tasting notes.

If you want a taste of what the team drink in their downtime, you have one week left to come & enjoy, before they change next week (as usual we are a bit slow with the promotion).

We’ve got a brilliant selection of w**es: from a Pét Nat rosé, via a Georgian orange w**e, to a chilled Sicilian Frappato & more…

Come by, drink and chat with the team and help settle the (mainly friendly) competition as to who has the best taste!

Another Vinyl Club offering for you all to kick-start the festival...

In the month of the Fringe, we’re celebrating innovation.
Recorded in first takes, changing the world of music forever, Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” curated a group of the finest improvisers in music history to join him in New York City and create lightning in a bottle. This record blew the gates open in 1959 for John Coltrane and co. to free themselves, their melodies, and their minds, and quit having to prove their genius through fast-and-furious complex bop compositions.

Come join us for Vinyl Club #8 on Weds 5th August to celebrate the one record Quincy Jones said he could listen to every day for the rest of his life, by the artist Bob Dylan said defined cool. Maybe you’ll agree! Let’s listen, discuss, and see what this record tastes like in the glass.

Vinyl Club with a twist this month...

On May 27th will be joining us to host an evening celebrating Cuban music and food with the focus on 1997’s classic album Buena Vista Social Club.

We’ll be listening through the record in standard Vinyl Club form but, for this one off event, whilst Todd is talking all things Buena Vista, we will also be working our way through three delicious plates of Cuban food paired with three w**es chosen to fit the music, the food and the vibes!

Three Shades of Gris 🩶

Sure, it’s not quite fifty but this month one of our new W**e Flights is all about the ‘Gris’. Two of the w**es are from long time favourite w**e producers **ery and **es , the third introduces an exciting new Slovenian producer **es that we are showcasing for the first time and keen to hear your thoughts!

‘Gris’ (French for ‘grey’) in w**e refers to a mutation of a grape variety which often has a more deeply coloured skin, generally pink, than most white grapes so the w**es they produce tend to be darker and, often,
deeper flavoured, too. Undoubtedly the most popular Gris grape of all is Pinot Gris and especially its more famed Italian counterpart, Pinot Grigio.
With this flight you have the chance to try three shades of grey - Sauvignon Gris, Grenache Gris and indeed Pinot Gris - but not as you know it! Come and taste for yourselves 🤌🏻
