We are sad to hear that Jim Rae has passed away following a battle with lung cancer.

Jim was a long-standing regular over many, many years at The Black Bull. A genuine character that was warm, friendly and could chat your ears off.

He will be missed but certainly never forgotten.

Rest well, Jim.

A funeral service will take place at Mortonhall Crematorium, Pentland Chapel, on Tuesday March 3rd 2026 at 1.30 pm, to which all are warmly invited. No flowers please. After the service there will be a collection for MacMillan Cancer Support.

One year on: Remembering The Black Bull Tavern
💀 1974 - 2024 🐃 🤘

The jukebox was loud, the bourbons were many, the beers were cold, the pool table was awkward, the stairs were deadly, the lights were low, the people made it... and we loved it!

One year ago today Edinburgh lost one it's most unique pubs and the city's original rock bar. It may be gone but it will never be forgotten.

Sadly, we can confirm that The Black Bull Tavern will cease trading from the end of this weekend. We hope you will join us over the next couple of nights for a proper send off.

We would like to thank every customer that has joined us over the many years we’ve had here. Also, to all present and past members of staff, we are eternally grateful for their contributions.
