Oakham Mohawk and JHB - Two of our most popular Ales at the moment.

Mohawk is a 4.4% ABV single-hop pale ale which has notes of lime and passionfruit.

Jeffrey Hudson Bitter (JHB) is a 3.8% ABV pale ale, brewed with Maris Otter and Clear Choice malts, plus Mount Hood and Challenger hops. It was launched in September 1993 as Oakhams first b**r.

Our pub has a great history about it, including lots of different names, owners and interior design dating back to 1747.

For most of the 20th century, it was called the Drawbridge, in reference to the nearby bridge over Water of Leith which would lift (and later swivel) to allow ships into the basin to unload their cargoes. It became the Malt and Hops in 1992 - a new name, but still very much a traditional pub.

A photograph from 1988 (seen below) shows the Drawbridge in a dilapidated state, with a mossy roof, broken windows and girders to prop the structure up. On the right is a new block of flats going up, signalling the emergence of the ‘new Leith’. Some of the old regulars have been coming here since the old days of the Drawbridge, and are more than happy to regale listeners with tales of how it used to be.
