We mentioned the other day in a post about Jameson's origin story here in Canonmills and got a message for more info, so here it is.

John Jameson (1740–1823) was originally a lawyer from Alloa in Scotland before he founded his distillery in Dublin in 1780. Previous to founding the distillery, he married Margaret Haig (1753–1815) in 1768. She was the eldest daughter of John Haig, a whisky distiller in Canonmills, Edinburgh.

The Haig Distillery was once the largest in Scotland and sat just around the corner from us on the Water of Leith. Jameson learned the business there and then moved to Dublin.

So although our pub and it's tenement didn't exist back then, there's nothing to stop us suggesting John Jameson wasn't enjoying a drink around these parts!

Jameson's is £4/35ml, £7.5 for an Old Fashioned.

What is Woven Whisky?

The new bottle on the bar is something quite different, blended for taste, and incredibly unique.

So is a local Whisky blending company run by Pete, Dunc and Nick. They take different component Whiskies and blend them into award winning modern blends, most expressions being purely Scottish.

The Woven Whisky is an international blend with a combo of Scotch + whiskies from Ireland, Canada & South Africa. So it's not Scotch under the rules, but very much created at their Leith studio.

Martin caught up with Pete there, and we figured it was about 21 years ago we did our first shift together in the Opal Lounge - the older crowd out there will know that was the place to be back in 2005..

So raise a glass to Woven, local taste makers that we can get behind.

Fact attack ahead of tonight's quiz (KO at 7.30, tables available to book online):

Lindores Abbey was the site of the first recorded production of Whisky in Scotland, way back in 1494. Now there's a new distillery making Scotch there and it's absolutely delicious.

But the story goes on, the Irish had apparently distilled Whiskey before us... but, a certain Scotsman called John Jameson who learned his craft here in Canonmills during the 18th century took the knowledge to Ireland. So they may have been first, but it took a Scotsman to put them on the world Whisky map!

Do you remember Smithies pub that spent over 40 years on Eyre Place?

Before it was torn down we saved the old gas lamps which hung outside for decades.

We found out that although they were eventually modified to be electrically powered, when installed they were the first UK pub lamps powered by mains gas.

They've been resting in our cellar for a while now, but over the next few weeks we'll be getting them ready for the next stage of their life under solar power on display in our windows.
