Longrow Red perhaps? Maybe a Dalmore Cigar Malt? Bunnahabhain Moine 2008 Red Wine Cask possibly?

Finding one, like our Aultmore 13yo, fully aged (rather than “finished”) in the red wine barrel is pretty rare but well worth checking out if you like notes of ripe red fruits, dark chocolate and warming baking spice. Such a well balanced dram and perfect for a breezy Autumn weekend.

Searching for Pintail? Just look for the duck 🩆

The marketeers of 1930 understood the power of distinctive and instantly recognisable branding. The Pintail duck (an elusive dabbling duck named after its pointed tail feather) appears in flight on every bottle today just as it did when Matthew Gloag & Son first launched this iconic brand in 1931.

And why try to fix what isn’t broken?

A striking, vintage look (as it first appeared in 1931) but a contemporary approach to maturing and “finishing” in sweet wine casks helps Pintail stand out from the crowd.

We’ve hosted tastings for and Mor Whisky Club in the last week and the feedback has been fantastic. Big thanks to everyone who joined us.

The fundamentals of great whisky are: 1) a well made distillate; 2) the finest quality oak casks and; 3) time.

Our bottles are designed with this in mind - look out for the distinctive charred barrel stave effect boxes and stylish copper tin capsules that feature on every Whisky Cellar Private Cellars Selection bottle.

These are the hallmarks of our brand, signifying well aged whiskies selected for bottling at just the right point of maturation.

This Strathmill 15 years old - Refill Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is a triumph in the gentler side of sherry maturation.

Light, fruity and fresh with a delicate oily texture, we wanted to elevate the signature Strathmill character, not mask it and took the view that a fresh ex-sherry Hogshead might do the latter.

Consider refill cask finishes if you prefer a whisky that offers complexity but hasn’t surrendered all of its distillate style to the barrel.

This has bags of refreshing stone fruit notes, spiced toasted nut mix, fresh herbs, an underlying toffee sweetness and that delicious olive oil mouthfeel.

Is there a weightier whisky out there than a Mortlach (“the beast of Dufftown”) spending a full 19 years ageing in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry Butt?

We doubt it and this very limited release from a few years ago had us in full-on ‘beast mode’.

While this a style that we particularly enjoy, we have been recently exploring a more traditional style of Single Malt, where cask influence takes a back seat to a more distillate-led character
.with some incredible releases to come later this year.

Keep an eye on our announcements for details.

This rare 16 year old Inchgower formed part of our latest Pintail bottling. With its weighty-waxy mouth feel and exotic spicy coastal character, we thought a good long finish in a stunning ex-Banyuls barrel.

Banyuls is a sweet, fortified wine made from mostly Grenache grapes grown on the lower reaches of the Pyrenees mountains (on the French side). The oak seasoned with this deliciously sweet red wine has added a refreshing kick of ripe red fruits, vanilla and a touch of cinnamon spice to this wonderfully complex dram.

Well worth seeking out one of the mere 220 produced.

This illustration of John Smeaton’s ‘Old Bridge’ across the River Tay has adorned the labels of every bottle of Brig O’Perth since the brand was launched in 1896.

Construction of the old Perth Bridge began in 1766 and was completed in 1771, funded by Thomas Hay, 9th Earl of Kinnoull. It has survived numerous floods over the centuries and Perth-based wines and spirits merchants Matthew Gloag & Son chose this now-Category A-listed landmark as the icon of their original ‘house blended Scotch’ label, with their original shop only a short stroll away.

Be sure to visit the beautiful 9-arched sandstone structure if you happen to find yourself in Perth and check out the flood lines etched into the brickwork showing the height of some historic flooding.

It’s going to be a big year ahead for the Brig O’Perth Scotch Whisky brand and we look forward to continuing the tradition of producing whiskies which are “desirably smooth and mellow to the taste” (The Lancet, 3rd July 1897).

How is everyone’s January going so far? We’re a good chunk of the way through already and it’s Saturday night
a good night to crack open this wonderful Glentauchers 12 years old fully matured in a first-fill ex-bourbon barrel.

This is white chocolatey, citrus zesty, brioche buttery, spiced lemon cakey heaven in a glass bottled at 56.4%

Our perfect serve at this very moment is a warm fire and a handful of freshly cracked walnuts left over from the festive stash.

Almost time to unveil our next Private Cellars Selection series with representation from Islay, Speyside and the Island region with a couple of ‘Secret’ distilleries under the spotlight.

Selecting casks for our bottlings remains every bit as exciting today as it was at the very beginning of our journey and we have some stunning drams to share during the year ahead.

Look out for updates on this page.
