Today is Plough Monday 😍 In medieval and early modern England, Plough Monday was the day when farm labourers returned to work after the long Christmas break. The plough symbolised the rebirth of farming and the start of the new growing cycle.

After the long Christmas season, farm workers would return to the fields, and villages held lively processions where “ploughboys” dragged a decorated plough through the streets, calling at houses for food, drink, or coins. It was believed this would bring good luck and a good harvest for the year ahead.

Some even said if you didn’t give, the plough might be pulled across your doorstep for bad luck!

Plough Monday reminds us how deeply seasonal life once was - when the year didn’t really begin until the land was ready to be worked again.
