My most recent watercolour and ink painting features the English village of Ombersley. When we visited England last year, we were driving along the road to Ombersley, and I knew right away that I wanted to paint it. I captured a photo, which I used to create the painting.
Ombersley is a village near Droitwich in the county of Worcestershire in the West Midlands of England. The first known reference to the village was the granting of a Charter to Abbott Egwin of Evesham Abbey in 706 AD.
During the reign of William the Conqueror, the Domesday Book indicates that the village was within an enclave of the “Ancient Hundred of Fishborough” in 1086, and remained the property of the Abbey of Evesham until the dissolution of the monasteries in the early 16th century. Ombersley was part of a Royal Forest until 1229.
Ombersley Court is the traditional home of the Lord Sandys, many of whom are buried in the family mausoleum in the churchyard of St. Andrew’s parish church.
As of 2022, there were 151 historic listed buildings in the parish, which now includes the combined parishes of Ombersley and Doverdale.
In the background, you can see The Kings Arms, a 15th century timber framed pub which came under new management in July of 2023.
It’s a beautiful village, so if you find yourself in the U.K., be sure to stop by and have a look!
