Last night saw Coolham full for another evening of top class live music provided by two contrasting acts, both guitar led and both with their roots in the blues.

Opening the evening was a duo comprising Neil Grove on guitar and Chris Sentance-Geraghty on harmonica, with both taking a turn at lead vocals. From the opening number it was clear that they are both extremely competent players with a knowledge of and passion for the blues of the 40’s,50’s and 60’s.

Their 60 min set included a mix of covers of material from some of the legendary blues musicians of that time along with that of some more obscure but excellent players, plus a good smattering of Neil’s original songs.

Throughout, the guitar picking and harp blowing was superb and the vocals strong. The audience loved what they delivered and a standing ovation said it all.

After the break, the volume and tempo increased as Mat Day and his band launched into their high energy instrumental take on ‘Eleanor Rigby', giving all 4 band members an opportunity to show their prowess. Their 90 min set went on to include a selection of Mat’s own well crafted compositions, interspersed with some well chosen covers.

Mat’s virtuosity on guitar was well known to those of us that had seen him previously but this time he added his lead vocals and band management skills to the mix and what we saw was a fully formed performer who is developing his own career and certainly has the potential to become a stand out live performer.

The charity collection produced a further £275 to bring the club’s total donations to Chestnut Tree House to £22, 929. As always, thanks to our audience for coming out and supporting live music and for their generosity in supporting the Childrens Hospice. Also to Ian and Mark for getting the sound and stage lighting spot on yet again.

Last night saw Coolham full for an evening of guitar magic provided by 2 very different young musicians, both who are establishing themselves as amongst the best on the live music circuit.
Opening saw the Coolham debut of 18 year old Jesse Garwood who treated the audience to a lesson in the art of finger picked acoustic guitar. Jesse’s main influence as a player is the globally renowned Australian guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel (who unbelievably has apparently played at Coolham Village Hall in the distant past). Despite his tender age, Jesse has developed an incredible skill as a player and actually caught the ear of his idol and was invited to join him on stage when he toured the UK last year.
Jesse is a fine vocalist too, as we witnessed from the couple of vocals he included in his 50 minute opening set. He also displays great stage presence and audience connection alongside his incredible guitar technique and received a much deserved standing ovation from the audience, Jesse Garwood is definitely a name to remember as he is destined for bigger things. He will certainly be invited back to the club very soon.
After the break, singer/songwriter/guitarist Connor Selby made his second visit to Coolham but this time as part of a trio that included Alessandro Cinelli ( The Cinelli Bros) on drums and bassist Stefan Redtenbacher (The Funkestra, Masterlink Sessions house band). This line up has only performed once before, at Rye Jazz Festival, when Connor’s band couldn’t get to the gig and Stefan and Alessandro stepped in at the very last minute. This was clearly going to be journey of discovery for both the musicians and the audience. However, with the combined talent and professionality of the 3 players it was a memorable set and we were approached to see whether we would like to host another performance of the trio, hence their appearance last night.
From the outset, it was apparent that we were in for a demonstration of improvisation in the vein of the early Blues Rock power trios like Cream, Taste and Hendrix. Connor took front of stage and showed his guitar and vocal skills throughout whilst Stefan and Alessandro provided a watertight backline underpinning Connor perfectly. It was obvious that the musicians were really enjoying the opportunity to stretch out and jam and the audience loved every minute of the 90 min set, resulting in a second equally deserved standing ovation of the evening.
The charity collection raised another £260 for Chestnut Tree House bringing the total to more than £22.5K. Thank you to all who have made this possible. Also must, as always, compliment our sound crew of Mark and Ian for doing a fantastic job as they always do.

Yesterday evening saw the return on the mighty Connolly Hayes to Coolham for our Xmas Bash. Demand for this gig was incredible with a sell out within a couple of hours of posting the event and a waiting list of over 60 for any returns. Those that managed to get tickets weren’t to be disappointed.
As they did last time, they opened for themselves with a 45 min stripped down acoustic set featuring vocalist Jess Hayes, guitarist and vocalist, Frankie Connolly, and Joe Mack on keyboards. This set was made up of covers including songs, from Jackson Browne, Eric Bibb, Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt and Lowell George. This set the scene for a full band set after the break.
With the addition of Beau Bernard on bass and Andy Wilder on drums the band started second set their signature high energy style and they maintained that throughout the 90 mins of both original songs from their current album, new material that will appear on their second album that is being put together presently and some superbly delivered covers. The inclusion of two Tedeschi Trucks songs in the set marked the influence of that band that is apparent in the Connolly Hayes sound.
The audience clearly loved what they saw and heard and we have had many request for the band’s return next year, which we are keen to try to organise.
At the beginning of the evening, Graeme told the audience that we were currently about £230 short of bringing the Club’s total donations to Chestnut Tree House to more than £22k and that we were hoping to manage to do that at the interval. In fact, the amount collected was an incredible £355 thanks to our ever generous audience members. Thank you everbody.
Last but not least the Sound and Lighting crew of Benny and Paul once again did an amazing job. It is incredible how they manage to transform a bare stage into a performance area and produce a perfect sound mix within the space of a few hours prior to each event we stage at the hall. Thanks lads.
