The North Wales Bluegrass Festival was organised and run by the world renowned musicians John Les and Gill Williams who together are the duo "Highly Strung". The festival featured highly acclaimed artists from around the world, local and up and coming talent, and also was a chance for players to showcase their music to the world of Bluegrass. It's with heavy hearts we have to announce the passing of our dear friend John Les.

As many of you will know John was the patron of the North Wales Bluegrass Festival; the festival was dependant on his backing and support to run so successfully for 28 years in Conwy, North Wales.

John began playing banjo in 1962 aged 17, was a seminal member of the famous Llandudno Folk and Boat Club for boys, and was involved in the early days of several Folk Clubs in North Wales in Llandudno, Rhyl and in the Conwy valley at the Groes Hotel often with his band 'The Harvesters'.

John was a consummate instrumentalist playing anything with strings including banjo, guitar, mandolin, mandocello, autoharp, Appalachian lap dulcimer and fiddle.

His first passion was Old Time songs and tunes, Bluegrass and Folk.

John drew his influences from a wide range of players, Ewan McColl, Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Jodie Stecher, Tony Ellis, Tony Rice and from the wealth of the forgotten writers of Appalachian traditional, Old Time and Gospel songs.

As "Highly Strung" John and his long time singing partner and friend Gill Williams - the Organising Force behind the Festival - travelled extensively, not only in the UK but also to Europe and the USA.

Highly Strung covered 1,500 miles through North Carolina and Tennessee, with performances in Columbus Hall, Ohio, Balsam Mountain Inn, Tennessee, and with the Singer / Songwriter's Guild of Nashville. During that tour they met and sang to John Hartford.

John was know to so many people throughout the UK and whenever you were with him, at a club, pub or festival, it was impossible to go for more than a few minutes without him being greeted by someone passing by, and he always made time to chat to them.

John is survived by his wife Joan, sons Guy & Drew, and his friend Gill.

Dear Friends
After a lot of discussion we have again taken the decision not to proceed with the North Wales Bluegrass Festival in 2018, despite ongoing rumours to the contrary.

When the Civic Hall closed in 2014, we had large cost increases, which included hiring a large marquee, and siting it on the tennis court. At a meeting in 2016 the Conwy County Borough Council told us that their usual support would no longer be available for the Festival.

We would like to thank all our loyal friends who have supported us throughout the past 28 years, and we are constantly reviewing the options to organise a North Wales Bluegrass Festival in the future.

Rocky Top Bluegrass
In the meantime, our esteemed friend, John Blissitt, is organising a Bluegrass picking weekend with 3 Bands, Open Mike, Scratch Bands, Workshops, Young musicians spots, Gospel session, Kids disco, Camping on site in Llandudno, 19th-22nd July 2018.

Check out www.Rockytopbluegrass.co.uk for details of campsite and tickets.

Hope to see you there - Gill, John Les and the Festival Team

Amazing what you find!
I was going through the old rubbish in the shed of a house we have just bought, and I found a copy of the North Wales Weekly News for Thursday July the 9th 1992. On page 18, this:

NOTICE

At a recent meeting with Conwy County Borough Council we were notified that the usual fiscal and practical support would no longer be available for the 2017 Festival.

After a lot of discussions, the decision has been made not to proceed with the 29th North Wales Bluegrass Festival in 2017.

Since losing the use of the Civic Hall after it closed in 2014, we have incurred large cost increases, in the supply and positioning of the large marquee on the tennis court, the removal and replacement of the tennis court fences, extra electrical provision etc. etc.

Added to this, Conwy County Borough Council have now closed and will be demolishing the school building in the corner of the park, where we held the workshops.

That area of the park will be a construction site during 2017, begining this spring, with implications that will restrict camping.

This would mean providing alternative accomodation for the workshops, again an extra expense.

We have also experienced a gradual decline in the number of ticket sales over the past few years.

We would like to thank all our loyal friends who have supported us throughout the past 28 years, and we will be constantly reviewing the options to possibly organise a North Wales Bluegrass Festival in 2018.

Due to illness the Vera van Heeringen Trio cannot now perform on Monday 24th of October, but sparing no expense we have been able to get Bakerfield in their place.

Appearing in other bands such as "Shake the Roots" and "Baker's Fabulous Boys" they are well known to audiences at the North Wales Bluegrass Festival, but this time they are appearing as a duo with their special blend of Americana, Bluegrass and (old-school) R&B.

Book your tickets now on the club website:

It's going to be a great night!

Hi Folks,
Just one day left before the Festival - Wow! - where did that year go!

IMPORTANT: If you are driving onto the site, please please take more care than usual. We have had some rain today and as you are probably aware there is great local sensitivity about not damaging the grassed area. Please follow the instructions of the Stewards when selecting a camping spot, and we would appreciate it if you would not use your vehicle during the festival to keep risk of damage to a minimum.

The first concert will be on Thursday evening in the Marquee, and we are looking forward to seeing all our friends, some for the first time this season!

Have a good journey to North Wales, and see you when you arrive!

Late announcement, on Sunday in the final session in the marquee Festival favourites, duo Jeni Hankins and Billy Kemp will be doing a pop-up surprise appearance!

They are actually playing a full 90 mins in Conwy on Monday evening with our friends Conwy Folk Club ( www.conwyfolkclub.org.uk ), and you can book tickets now (see picture below)

You won't be able to stay camped on the cricket ground on Monday night, but there are a few touring parks around, the nearest is Conwy Holiday Park ( http://www.conwyholidaypark.co.uk/ ) less than 10 mins. drive from Conwy, contact details for this and others will be available at the Festival Office.

So if you thought you would be disappointed by missing Jeni & Billy, now you don't have to ;)

Don't forget folks - the music starts with the Thursday evening concerts, just 4 short days away!

See you there!

The Southwest Virginia catch in Jeni’s voice blends perfectly with Billy's finely tuned vocal harmonies. Jeni’s solid rhythmic playing provides a solid bed for Billy's syncopated and gorgeously melodic guitar and banjo solos and fills. Novelist Lee Smith says, "Jeni and Billy's stunningly original…
