The Bayley Arms (pub, dining, hotel) is in the heart of the beautiful village of Hurst Green in the This is situated near the village ‘green’.

The Bayley Arms has recently undergone a major refurbishment to return it to it’s former glory as a fantastic pub with a quality food offer. The pub has been tastefully refurbished to further enhance its relaxed ambience & remains full of atmosphere, character & charm. s for the more discerning diner. Although we pride ourselves on our fantastic food offer we understand that customers don’t always wish to dine with us. The Bayley very much retains its basis as a pub & therefore will always welcome guests who just want a drink, and they won’t be disappointed! With our great range of cask ales, draught lagers & delicious wines it’s the perfect place to stop off for a quick one! We also offer comfortable accommodation in 8 well decorated en-suite rooms with all the facilities of a modern hotel. All rooms include a freshly cooked English breakfast using quality locally sourced produce. History

With the founding of Stonyhurst Hall, by Richard Shireburn in 1592, the hamlet of Hurst Green (about a mile away) began to develop, as often happens with the building of Manor Houses. The hamlet’s development continued, once the College was founded in 1794, and by the early 20th Century, the village was about the size it is now (approximately 500 residents). There is a distinctive war memorial to World Wars I and II bearing the names of the soldiers who died from the area. At the other side of the green stands the prominent St Peter’s Guild Club, a catholic social club which has existed for well over 200 years. Shireburn donated the impressive and distinctive Alms Houses to the village. These Alms Houses were originally based on Longridge Fell but moved to Avenue Road. The presence of at least two old bobbin mills bear witness to the cottage-industry that was once here. However, this is a community that mainly thrives on farming and tourism – with some people working at the local college and many more commuting to local towns. The Tolkien Trail

Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley is considered by some to be one of the country’s leading catholic public schools. It is where JRR Tolkien sent his son. Presumably whenever he came to visit he took the opportunity to explore the nearby countryside. It is widely assumed that the setting of the Shire in “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, is based on this enchanting part of Lancashire. The ‘Tolkein Trail’ is a 9Km/5.5 miles circular walk starting and finishing at Hurst Green.
