WE MADE IT // 4 YEARS ON FOREGATE

We’ve officially been here longer than we were in the old Market!

We still get it now…
“So… do you regret not going in the new market?”
“We weren’t sure it would work at this end of town…”

Fair enough. At times, we weren’t sure either.

Moving here was a calculated leap of faith. We stuck ourselves right out on the end of town in what is essentially a big concrete bunker, saved only by gloriously big windows and a patio perfect for people watching.

We started with a giddy 'concept' phase (even manifesting the glitter ball 🪩).

Then a “WTF have we done?” build phase.

Back in the old Market, we had a simple idea. Stock the best beer we could get our hands on and give our team as much knowledge as possible to sell it. We’d never poured a pint before, but we knew our stuff. A posh off licence with a few taps… and it worked.

Then, as the old market we dearly loved came to an end, we put our big pants on.

Foregate meant going bigger. More beers, more ciders, more taps. But more importantly, doing things our way and getting closer to you.

Over the last four years, our gaff has become more than somewhere to drink. It’s fostered so many beautiful friendships, become home to so many Clubs and Groups, a place for artists, DJs, comedians, parties, engagements, birthdays and plenty of (some great, some not so great) ideas.

We’ve hosted tap takeovers and tastings, packed out comedy nights and dancefloors, started Chester Craft Beer Expo at Storyhouse, taken the bar out to festivals, weddings and Chester Pride, and somewhere along the way TBP turned into something bigger, something we’re ridiculously proud of.

Along the way, we’ve picked up National Cider Pub of the Year 2024, followed it up as National Runner Up 2025, mastered cask beer, and most recently brought Jaimitos in for some seriously good food to go with your delicious drinks.

Not everything worked first time. Some of it felt completely unmanageable (hospitality ain't getting any easier!)

But none of it would have happened if we'd stayed in our comfort zone.

So yeah... we think we made the right move.

Thanks for being part of it ❤️
(Still never got that tiger though)

DJ D-Wad in today

Who knew we could make him even happier than he normally is behind the bar by having him on the decks

He's got no clue what he's doing but he does play some fairly acceptable tunes

Come down for beer, Mexican Street Food and to support (laugh at) Dale!

We love Cider...And us along with some awesome venues and producers and making headlines

Laura Hadland sums it up perfectly: there’s some outstanding cider being made and poured across the country, even if it’s not always as easy to find as it should be.

We’re proud to get a mention alongside some incredible venues across the UK and the producers like Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co and Nightingale Cider Co who create some of the most tasty and carefully made ciders out there ...and even prouder to keep flying the flag for proper cider here in Chester.

Our very own, Lisa also chatted to the Telegraph about our love of great Cider. If you’ve got access, the full article is well worth a squizz 👇

When John Sturgis first approached me saying that he was writing an article about how he believed you couldn't get a decent pint of cider in the UK, I was initially quite hesitant.

I know that you can, that there are loads of fabulous producers and great places to drink their wares across the land - although, of course, not as ubiquitous as we perhaps might like.

I gave John some words to this effect, but declined his request to furnish him with some recommendations. If he was on a journey of cider discovery, then he would have to put in the legwork. His piece came out in The Telegraph yesterday and I have to say, he's done a great job.

I was worried my comments about brilliant producers would be lost in a tirade against British cider, but not so. He's managed to find plenty of great examples (including no small number I would have included myself, had I written it - like Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co, Nightingale Cider Co and That Beer Place.) And he's given a nod to my book, Beer Festivals, and given Dick Withecombe an honorable mention in the process, so you can't ask more than that.

Well worth a read, if you have a subscription. Linked in the comments.

Lovely bit of press to share...

We’ve been included in a recent round-up of great pubs to visit in Cheshire, featured in Cheshire Life Magazine and covered online by Chester Standard

A big thank you to Kate & Phil from British Beer Breaks for including us in their Chester picks. It’s genuinely appreciated to be mentioned alongside our mates at The Chester Station Tap Room. Chester is a fantastic beer City, punching well above it's weight!

BEYOND HUMAN 2 //

Sun’s out, the patio is ready...even the bi-folds are open! 😎

There's something very special happening this afternoon to soundtrack your sunny Saturday.

From 2pm we’ve got some electronica artists in doing live sets upstairs and down, working through a mix of analogue and digital kit to build something completely on the fly. No DJ sets, no playlists - just proper hands-on, improvised electronic music as it happens. Legends from across the UK.

Pop down, grab a beer, and see where it goes. Starts around 2 til late.

FOOD //
We have Jaimitos in the house too with the final weekend of the Posh Kabab shop til we switch to a new menu! grab it whilst you can!
