This week Caterham ArtsHouse hosted one of its most moving and creative productions to date. Scorched presented the true story of a WW2 veteran, following his mind sinking into the sands of time.
The production used physical theatre, incredible projections of animated tattoos and puppetry to tell Jack’s story of the Battle of Tobruk, from the armchair of his rest home. Robin Berry’s performance of the older Jack was sensitive and convincing, gripping audience members as he transformed into his younger self.
We are delighted that Caterham ArtsHouse has been able to bring such innovative and visually striking theatre to Caterham!
Our next production – Love & Rabbits – the Underground Clown Club– takes place on Friday 9 June at the changed time of 7.30pm. This is a spike Milligan style spoken word performance by the Underground Comedy Club. Book tickets on Wisepay now!

Second ArtsHouse Production: Macbeth

The second ArtsHouse production brought an intelligent, exhilarating sprint through revered Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth on Thursday 4 May. Visiting company 6FootStories led a workshop for pupils before a stunning performance in front of a packed audience in the Deayton Theatre

Three gnarly fortune tellers live apart from decent society, amongst the rats in an old junk yard. Eager to teach the selfish world of man a lesson, they prepare a fortune reading that will destroy a throne and everything around it. The witches go about plotting the fall of Macbeth, rehearsing what they hope will be the bloody and catastrophic aftermath of their prophecy. The three actors brilliantly played the keys roles with humour and violence where appropriate. The musical interludes lightened the play momentarily whilst instantly bringing the audience back to the reality of the storyline of Macbeth. The immersive set was made entirely of recycled objects, and deranged cast played Macbeth, and his wife, and all the other major characters, swapping roles like a gory game of pass the parcel.

A great review from our opening night!

‘Austentaious’ is an entirely improvised comedy play in the style of Jane Austen. Join the all-star cast as they create a riotously funny new literary masterpiece, based on nothing more than a title suggested by the audience.’

On the strength of the above description, a large number of eagerly expectant parents, pupils and friends packed the foyer of the Humphreys Theatre. A crackle of excitement, but also a hint of trepidation filled the atmosphere. Beside me one visitor asked her friend if she thought that we, as the audience, would be participating in the improvisation alongside the actors. Whilst replying ‘surely not…’ her friend did not look entirely convinced. Indeed many of us were not completely sure what to expect. Our fears however, could not have been more unfounded. From the first moment, we were treated to a roller coaster ride through the familiar world of Austen’s lovable characters, piercingly portrayed with razor wit and split second comic timing. The resultant heady mix had us all helpless with laughter at every turn. More than one unfortunate audience member found themselves doubled up, unable quite to control their fits of giggles. In the words of Jane Austen, the Queen of wit herself, “For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?”

I left the theatre determined to see this company in action again in the not too distant future. It would be hard to imagine a more fitting and fun way to have launched Caterham ArtsHouse, the new Caterham live theatre venture, and I look forward to forthcoming evenings of outstanding performance.
