Over the past months, Cellar Nine has been an exciting creative journey for us. We’ve loved welcoming so many wonderful people through the doors to share wine, music, conversation and the unique atmosphere that has been growing here.

However, like many historic buildings in Carlisle, our venue occasionally reminds us that it needs a little extra care. We’ve been dealing with an ongoing issue in the kitchen area and have decided that the best step forward is to temporarily close while essential repairs and improvements are carried out.

During this time we will also be reviewing a few areas of the business, carrying out some staff training, and taking the opportunity to make a number of changes behind the scenes that we believe will strengthen the experience we offer.

We are incredibly grateful for the support the Carlisle community has shown us. Your encouragement, conversations, and shared evenings have meant a great deal.

For now, Cellar Nine will be closed while these works take place. We will keep everyone updated as things progress.

This past Tuesday evening at Cellar Nine, we had the pleasure of welcoming Carlso, representing Vallegre Porto Wines of Portugal, for an intimate wine tasting experience hosted alongside Lancaster Wines and our owner Bruno.

Our second wine tasting this month — and each one is shaping something truly special.

Guests explored a beautiful selection of wines, finishing with two exceptional Ports that genuinely surprised even the owners themselves. Moments like these are exactly why we host these evenings… discovering hidden gems with our cellar friends so we can carefully curate wines worthy of sharing with Carlisle.

Every tasting helps us refine and elevate our collection — slowly, thoughtfully, and with intention. We’re not rushing change. We’re allowing Cellar Nine to grow into something beautiful, one bottle, one conversation, one evening at a time.

So if you haven’t visited lately, pop in and experience the quiet evolution happening here.

We’ve been quietly busy since the weekend… and Cellar Nine is starting to feel very different. ✨

What was once a space telling the story of Maria is now gently transforming into something new — a lounge and cellar shaped by the spirit of a speakeasy jazz and blues club. Comfortable seating. Intimate corners. Softer lighting. Spaces designed to slow you down rather than rush you through.

Over the coming weeks and months, each area will help bring to life a chilled, tucked-away environment — a place to slip out of the busyness of the city, lose yourself in a book, or settle in for unhurried conversation with friends.

The images shared here offer a first glimpse of new artwork being introduced to complement the upper common areas, with further pieces already being created for the lower cellar. It’s a transition from story to atmosphere — from narrative to feeling.

A note from the heart 🤍
From the very beginning, La Cueva de la Llorona was never just about food.
It was about being around the table, sharing stories, laughter, culture, and moments that linger long after the night ends.
We want you to know first and foremost: we are still here.
We are continuing — now as a drinks-led space, focusing on wines, custom cocktails, coffee, and the atmosphere so many of you love.
Over recent months, we’ve made every possible effort to continue offering our authentic Mexican kitchen. However, a succession of essential building repairs — arriving at an already vulnerable time of year — has made it impossible for us to continue food service in a way that honours the standard and heart we set out with. This wasn’t an easy decision, and it’s one we didn’t come to lightly.
To everyone who joined us around our tables for Mexican dishes, celebrations, first dates, and familiar evenings — thank you. Those memories are deeply woven into the story of this place.
At its core, the spirit of La Llorona has always been about togetherness. About gathering. About warmth, art, culture, and connection. That spirit isn’t disappearing — it’s evolving.
In the coming days, we’ll be reimagining the space entirely. Still expressive. Still cultural. Still inviting. But shaped into something new and exciting — something that feels right for this moment and for what lies ahead.
January is an incredibly challenging month for independent hospitality. Carlisle’s bars, cafés, and venues rely on small acts of support — a coffee here, a drink there — to keep places like this alive. If you believe in local, creative spaces, your presence truly matters.
