Newly Reopened following extensive renovation due to Flood Damage.

Located on the A6 at Ambergate, near to the Confluence of the Rivers Amber and Derwent.

Nearby are Shining Cliff Woods, Cromford Canal, Whatstandwell Woods, Crich Tramway Museum,Peak District, High Peak Trail, Black Rocks, Alport Heights, Derwent Valley Mills,l Midland Railway Centre, Great British Car Journey to name but a Few.

Plenty of Options before Finishing the Day with Good Food and Real Ales.

First Impressions upon Entry :- Contemporary Spacious Interior, Offering an Extensive Menu with Mains ranging from £14-50 to £22-00 for an 8 Ounce Rump Steak.

Play Area with Bouncing Castle for Children and Plenty of Outdoor Seating.

Patio Area to the Front of the Pub, Shaded by a Large Tree.

Adjacent to Ambergate Railway Station and on the TransPeak Derby to Buxton Bus Route.

Situated in the Village of Brassington, about 1 1/2 Miles North West from Carsington Water Visitors Centre.

Reopened after a Period of Closure, which the Previous Landlord attributed Solely to Rising Costs, particularly Energy.

On the Edge of the Peak District National Park, there's a Wealth of Interesting Places to Visit and Things to Do.

The Old Yew Tree, South Wingfield, Alfreton, Derbyshire. DE55 7NH

Situated within Walking Distance of the 15th Century Wingfield Manor, where Mary Queen of Scots was Imprisoned for some time.

Sadly the Manor is not Currently Open to the Public, but Footpaths do give the Opportunity to View the Imposing Stucture.

First Impressions upon Entry, Spotlessly Clean and Very Welcoming.

Outdoor Seating to Make the Most of Better Weather.

No Regular Food Offering at the present time, although there was a Sausage and Cider Festival on the Day we Called.

The Hotdogs made using Good Quality Butchers Sausages, Choice of Flavours.

The Pub has an Excellent Website, providing a Wealth of Detail.

Real Ales available at the Bar were :- Bass, Crich Pedal Power and Camden Pale Ale.

I Opted for Half a Pint of Bass which together with a Coffee came to £5-15.

Separately, there were 10 Ciders on Offer.

Wingfield Station

A Bit of Admin Licence on this One.

Not a Pub, but equally nice for a Coffee, Cake, Savouries or Ice Cream.

Situated on the Edge of South Wingfield Village, near Alfreton, Derbyshire, England.

Entirely run by volunteers, the Grade 2-Star listed station has been fully restored to its original May 1840 condition. It is the last surviving station building of the North Midland Railway from Derby to Leeds. The station is also the finest surviving work of its architect Francis Edward Thompson and is the World’s oldest completely original railway station building.

A Latte Coffee and a Pot of Matlock Meadows Ice Cream £6-00.

Cafe has Indoor and Outdoor Seating, some of it about 10 Feet away from the Midland Main Railway Line, which can be interesting as Inter City Express Trains Thunder past at about 80 miles per hour.

The Station has been Authentically Restored and the Volunteers make you feel Extremely Welcome.

Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10-00 am to 4-00 pm

Recently Changed Hands, The Spanker has Set it's Sights on continuing to be at the Heart of the Community.

On April 1, it announced a Review of the Name was being Undertaken as reference to Spanking now has other Undesirable Connotations. !!!!

On a Spring Day in Derbyshire, where Temperatures are expected to reach 21c, what Better than to Sit on the South Facing Front of the Pub, in the very Welcome Sunshine.

A Fine View is afforded of Heage Windmill, which on Certain Days can be seen Working. The only Working Six-Sailed Stone Tower Windmill in England. It was first built in 1797.

Stoneground Flour from the Windmill is available to Purchase.

At the Time of Our Visit, The Spanker had Several Real Ales on Draught. I Chose Half a Pint of Peculier IPA, which together with a Coffee came to £4-55.

A Bowl of Homemade Chips £4-00.

Has a Varied Menu with Main Courses Ranging from £12-50 to £16-50.

Situated about 3 Miles North of Belper, just off the A610 and Close to both the A6 and A38.

As the Name suggests, it is Adjacent to the remains of the Former Cromford to Langley Mill Canal, Opened in 1794. The Pub dating from the same Time.

In Addition to being a Micro Brewery and Village Pub, the Canal Features an Extensive Menu and also Offers Accommodation.

Trip Advisor Reviews show a High Degree of Satisfaction with all Elements of the Business.

A Pub I have Passed many times, but never actually Called in.

Located Close to Crich Stand Memorial Tower and Tramway Village.

First Impressions upon Entry :-

Plenty of Parking Space.

Outdoor Seating for the Warmer Month's.

Modern Style Interior.

I Opted for Half a Pint of Brooklyn, an Hazy Ale with a Grapefruit like Taste. Together with a Coffee (Without Biscuit) coming to £6-00. I do find it Disappointing, despite charging around £3-00 for a Standard White Coffee, some places Choose not to add this Enjoyable Finishing Touch.

Individually Wrapped Biscoff's Retail for around £0-10 each.

Cromford Canal from nearby Ambergate provides Opportunity for Walking some 5 Miles completely Off Road to Cromford for Matlock Bath.

There are both Buses and Trains back to Ambergate if 5 Miles is enough Walking.

Black Rocks at Cromford / Wirksworth, after a bit of a Climb, has Spectacular Views over Matlock Bath and the Derwent Valley.
Middleton Top, Cromford Mill and Lea Wood Pump House offer Glimpses of Industrial Heritage

WIld Garlic and Bluebells in Whatstandwell Woods, adjacent to the Canal, during the Spring are Plentiful.

The Wild Garlic Leaves make a Tasty Soup and Excellent Garlic Butter / Bread.

The Old Black Swan, Crich, Derbyshire DE4 5DG.

A Pub I have Passed many times, but never Called in.

Situated Midway between Belper and Matlock in the Peak Practice TV Series, Fictional Village of Cardale.

I seem to Recall one Episode where the Pub Featured with Beer Barrels Rolling down the Hill, causing some degree of Havoc.

Located on what is Known as the Last Link in the Pennine Hills, Close to Crich Stand Memorial Tower and Tramway Village.

First Impressions upon Entry :-

Outdoor Seating for the Warmer Month's.

Nice and Warm with a Large Bar and a Couple of more Cosy Snug Areas.

Real Ales available upon my Visit were :-

Down Ale
Nice Weather
Black Charge Stout
Brother Rabbit

I Opted for Half a Pint of Black Charge, a Cornish Brew from Truro, very nice too. Together with a Generous Mug of Coffee (With Biscuit) coming to £5-55.

Offers a Straightforward Menu, Ranging from £9-95 to £15-95 for Sunday Lunch.

A Typical Derbyshire Village Pub, with a Steady Flow of Patrons for Wednesday Afternoon.

The Loaf Bakery, about 2 Minutes walk from the Pub, provides the Opportunity to Buy from a Range of Tasty Artisan Breads.

On the Way back to the Car, I Called in at the Traditional Village Butchers and Bought the Ingredients for a Take Home Porky Platter.

Wingfield Manor, about 2 Miles Distant, is an Imposing 15th Century Manor House, where Mary Queen of Scots was held Prisoner in the 1500's.

Whilst not currently Open to the Public, the Ruins are clearly Visible from the Road with a Lay By conveniently situated.

Cromford Canal nearby provides Opportunity for Walking.

WIld Garlic and Bluebells in Whatstandwell Woods, adjacent to the Canal, during the Spring are Plentiful.

The Wild Garlic Leaves make a Tasty Soup and Excellent Garlic Butter / Bread.

Situated Midway between Belper and Matlock, although there is Currently a Road Closure preventing Access from the Cromford Direction. Other routes are Open.

Located on what is Known as the Last Link in the Penniine Hills, Directly Beneath the Crich Stand Memorial Tower and Tramway Village.

First Impressions upon Entry :-

An Old Fashioned Real Ale Pub, Built in Local Gritstone about 1800, the Interior typical of the1960's. Four Cosy Rooms to Enjoy a Beer or Two.

Outdoor Seating for the Warmer Month's.

As Traditional a Pub as you might Expect to Find.

Log Burner Stoves providing plenty of Heat on a Chilly Winters Day.

Real Ales available upon my Visit were :-

Moonshine
Doom Bar
Barnsley Bitter
Manticore

I Sampled Half a Pint of Sharp's Doom Bar, which together with a Regular Coffee came to £3-30.

A Straightforward No Frills Menu of Home Cooked Pub Favourites Priced from £13-95 to £17-95, Pizza from £11-50 to £12-50.

Also Light Bites, Specials and Desserts.

A Generous Portion of Handcut Chips, Perfectly Cooked, Complimented the Beer and Coffee.

The Cromford Canal nearby provides Opportunity for Walking.

Situated about 4 Miles West of Belper, on the Ashbourne Road.

Back in the 60's and 70's the Bar used to Feature a Lady playing Piano to a Full House of Patrons.

First Impressions upon Entry:-

Spacious Open Plan Bar and Dining Areas.

Largely, but not Exclusively, Committed to Dining.

A Variety of Themed Events, including Sunday Lunch, Pizzas, Classic Car and Bikes. Pies, Quiz Nights, Valentines Day and Mother's Day.

Outdoor Seating for the Warmer Month's.

Marstons Pedigree and Courage Directors Ales were on the Pumps.

On the Day I Visited :-

I Opted for Half a Pint of Marstons Pedigree, which together with a Coffee (No Biscuit) came to £5-40.

A Wide Food Menu from £14-45 for a Burger to £24-95 for a Sirloin Steak, with Plenty of Choices in Between.

Something I had not seen before, Hot Pork Scratchings on the Bar.

Alport Heights nearby has Spectacular Views across Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire,Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and West Midlands, with notable landmarks including The Wrekin, Long Mynd, and Clee Hill. Free Parking,. A Tranquil Spot just to Sit and Enjoy the Open Countryside, with Open Space for any Kids to Enjoy themselves.

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in Wirksworth, Offers the Opportunity to Take a Train Journey, some Steam Hauled, 9 Miles through the Ecclesbourne Valley to Duffield.

Carsington Water is some 8 Miles Distant.

Wirksworth nearby is a Charming Town to Visit. Ken's Supermarket is Known for having Locally Made, Freshly Delivered Pork Pies about 11-00 am on Saturday. They Sell Out very Quickly apparently, you Might just get Lucky.
