Latest news on the Prince of Wales
The Prince of Wales is now under CGP ownership, and we’ve started work on the first phase of the project. We’re currently clearing up the site and making sure the building is watertight and structurally sound. Once this is finished, there will be a pause in the work while we finalise the plans for the next phase.
We’re fully committed to restoring the Prince of Wales as a pub, but it’s a big project that will take a long time. We’ll keep you updated on how it’s progressing.

Hello loyal Prince of Wales Followers!

You may have been wondering why refurbishment work has been slower than expected on the Prince of Wales. Unfortunately, we, as a business, are not immune to global challenges and the effect they have had on the significant costs associated with this project. Having recently undertaken to put a new roof on the premises, which wasn’t within the original scope of work, it has become necessary to put a temporary pause on proceedings whilst we try to anticipate how best we can continue with our plans. We have always endeavoured to be as transparent as possible with our vision for the Prince of Wales, which is much cherished by so many, so please be patient. We will keep you updated as best we can. Your continued interest and support is, as always, very much appreciated.

Hello Prince of Wales Followers.

We hope you enjoyed the Easter break and have a good Bank Holiday this weekend!

Most of the major elements of the strip out at the Prince are now complete or nearing completion but unfortunately there have not been as many interesting items that have revealed themselves to us since our last update! However, it’s great to see work starting that will make the building safe, secure, warm and ready for opening.

General internal structural works are nearing completion with the replacement of joists, lintels and beams where needed, keeping as much of the original elements and replacing from local and sustainable sources.

Most of the old external render has now been stripped off in preparation for applying the external insulated render to the building. In parallel the team are currently gearing up for roof replacement works on several areas of the roof to ensure it’s structurally sound and watertight.

On the subject of remaining watertight the cellar pump system (not for the beer!) has been upgraded to deal with the potential issue around flooding.

Our personal favourite is that chimneys have been swept ready for those cosy nights with a pint, good company and conversation but lets enjoy summer first! 😎

Hello Prince of Wales Followers,

We hope this note finds you all well.

The Prince of Wales is continuing its new journey in earnest. The strip out works are nearing completion, giving us a fuller view of some of the original building and its structure. This includes the front doorstep to the original entrance of the building (pictured below). We are keen that this forms part of the new Prince of Wales as we believe it dates back to 1850, in which case it must have seen a lot of feet coming and going! If it could speak we're sure it could probably tell a few lively tales!

Another interesting find was when we removed the cupboard in the annex we uncovered the old side door entrance with its original letter box (pictured below).

Internal spaces are taking shape, including the new boot room through to the bar which will provide level access from the car park into the pub, some of the building's original fireplace openings have been reinstated and tented scaffolding is up ready for window replacement, roof repair works and re-rendering of the façade.

Next time, we need to start talking beer. As Hunter S Thompson said, “Good people drink good beer.”

Until next time. Cheers!

Hello Prince of Wales Facebook Family,

We hope you are well despite even more storms and inclement weather.

The demolition and strip out of the Prince of Wales continues and much of the pub is back to bare walls, floors, and ceilings.

The ceilings have been stripped back showing the current joists and this process has released some of the history of the pub over the years. The photograph shows ci******es and matches that literally fell out of the ceiling!

It would be great if any of you could tell us more about them, perhaps the year they were from? Maybe a relative or patron used to smoke the same brand? It would be fab to see your comments in the chat/thread. These items will increasingly become great curiosities as smoking becomes a thing of the past so we will do some research from our side and update you next time.

Elsewhere in the building, repairs continue to the structure and in the immediate coming weeks the building team will be introducing one or two new structural openings.

As always, we are reusing materials where we can and sourcing items such as replacement beams locally wherever possible.

We look forward to your comments regarding the ci******es and matches and will keep you updated on any other interesting items we find.

Until next time …

Hi Prince of Wales Facebook Community,

We hope your new year resolutions are still intact.

Work is now back in full swing after the Christmas/New Year break and as we enter 2022 proper, the Prince of Wales has begun its transformation in earnest and at pace.

This phase will see the unavoidable but temporary removal of the defibrillator. We have explored all options to find another site for this equipment whilst works are in progress but a practical and workable solution couldn’t be found. We are pushing to get this back in place as soon as we can and will keep you updated so please keep checking in here for updates.

The demolition works are now being carried out in preparation for some of the new elements that will be needed when the pub opens again this Summer.

The external toilet, oil tanks and LPG store have all now been removed, which means we have important space to install upgraded power and services which will be needed for the new bar, kitchen and guest rooms.

We’re really excited that the external concrete ramp, ground slabs and plinth have been demolished – whilst that news may not rock your respective boats it means that we can now build a fully accessible entrance which is important both to you and us.

But, importantly, the ramp will also double up as an access ramp to get those lovely kegs of beer brewed right there on site, in your local, in and out of the Prince of Wales micro-brewery. That’s if you lot don’t want to share and drink it all!

For those of you passing the site regularly, you will soon see a change as the site is almost prepared for the external scaffolding, with scaffold due to go up in early February.

And before we end this update, we just want to say again that we are working to keep as much of the materials from this phase of demolition and strip out for re-use wherever possible in line with our promise to you the community.

We hope that the next updates will include photos of the Prince of Wales as it starts to take on its new cloak and crown.

Hello to our loyal Facebook followers (or is that now “Meta” Followers?)!

First, we hope you are all safe and well after the unprecedented storms that hit the area over the last couple of weeks.

We promised to keep you updated on the progress of refurbishment and building work at The Prince of Wales.

The first piece of good news is that all the asbestos located on site has now been removed and safely disposed of in line with appropriate regulations.

Since our last post on 26th November the ongoing building strip out continues and as you’d expect this is a careful process as we try and reclaim as much material that can be recycled, reused or upcycled. We are particularly keen that furniture and heritage items are delicately removed to storage to ensure the Prince of Wales’ history and personality can be stylishly reappropriated in the new version.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get that much help from “Arwen” (and our team is definitely more sensitive/discerning) so we continue to clear the external structures from the site including garage and storage units.

So, despite some minor weather issues, we absolutely remain on track for the strip out to be complete mid January. This will make way for the heavier construction works to start and the next exciting phase to begin with gusto.

Wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year!

Cheers!

Happy Christmas from everyone involved with the Prince of Wales. Hopefully this time next year we'll be able to enjoy a pint together! 🍻😊

Thanks again for the turn out and support in Victory hall last month. It was lovely to see, and hear from, so many people who have a clear passion for the pub.

As we outlined at the meeting, the intention with the Prince of Wales is to make a building for a lasting future, where people can stay or pop in to enjoy real ale, good food and a great local atmosphere as well as seeing the brewery, either drinking on-site or taking it home to share!

Everything is still on track for work to start work in January. Work on the strip-out is almost complete and we are getting a much better overview of the task at hand.

Discussions have already taken place about the Brewery and brew kit as we are excited to maintain the legacy of a micro-brewery. As well as that brewed on site, there will be a steady flow of other local beer available.

We hope you enjoying the improved weather this week, after what seemed like weeks of continuous rain. Let’s hope it continues in the run up to Christmas!
