This has just been posted by a local who lives in the flats at the back of the pub. Think it sums up exactly whats been going on......first hand experience........please read below..

As somebody who lives probably as close to the back of the pub/ beer garden as you can get, I’m gutted this has happened

Seeing the place thrive after lockdown was amazing, after the Bucaneer had spent a long long time as quite frankly a very boring pub that was always changing hands because for what I imagine was low revenue & not being able to survive

Yes when the pubs reopened & the bucanner became the most popular place to go (first time in its history) within the first 3-4 weeks it did get mega busy and a huge influx of people, a lot of them the younger gen 18-22 or whatever went, but if this was a normal year the crowds of that demographic would have never been like that, because they would have been on lads or girls holidays or living at there unis or maybe just sick of the pubs because they had had them all year - they were overly excited with is understandable

John has his staff were great and highly accommodating and from what I saw followed the rules well enough and yes there were a few issues at the start when it got unexpectedly mega busy and there was huge numbers, noisy and a bit of scrapping in the car park but you can not blame that on the pub at all it could’ve happened anywhere- I saw the whole thing out of my living room window and it was just the teenage gang culture there is now kicking off, again find that hard to pin the blame on the pub or the owner

And Ive seen a lot of people saying on socials etc

“Shouldn’t serve someone if they are too drunk”

Everyone knows you can put a sober face on for 30 seconds whilst getting served or that one drink may change it all for ya

Again unfair placed blame imo

After that though he did get security in for the busy nights which did a fine job, told me off for being too noisy a couple times that’s for sure and separated the “bigger crowds”

Think it’s a shame that John and his staff are out on a limb now, they did not deserve that, anyone who lives in the area around the pub must admit the last few weeks have been quieter with a lot less noise and that would have only continued moving into autumn and winter

And then next year been more of a normal year hopefully

I don’t think the pub got a fair enough chance & at the end of the day it’s people’s livelihoods now ruined

Please don’t throw allegations out online it’s not really that helpful

Sorry to hear this has happened,

Time to set the record straight.

Prior to lockdown the buccaneer was beginning to see an increase in trade of both wet and food sales, things were going in the right direction with regular music nights, quizz nights and entertainment.

The buccaneer was know as a pub frequented by a generally older clientel.

Post lockdown, many of the regular customers, being older, stopped coming in due to the covid situation health fears and government advise regarding shielding.

It was my duty as a business owner, employer and in receipt of tax payers money in the form of the government grant issued to pubs to try to keep the business afloat by trying to increase revenues to pay staff wages, rent and utility bills and taxes. If I had not done something the pub would have closed many weeks ago due to lack of trade.

I placed a projector screen, and monitor in the back bar, where people could choose music videos and a few more suitable lights to improve the atmosphere, with the intention of attracting a younger crowd to fill.the void caused by the older regulars not using the pub anymore for very understandable reasons.

I did not ever promote the change on social media as has been suggested.

As we know now, this approach worked, perhaps too well and initially we had a large influx of mainly younger people coming to the pub. In the first few weeks yes there were problems with some younger customers causing issues when leaving and a fight almost a quarter of a mile away from the pub.

Yes I admit I struggled to cope with the large number of people trying to use the pub and yes I admit that I made a few mistakes along the way in the first couple of weekends trying to deal with the situation.

However, I quickly, implemented change and used resources to tackle the issue.this included, hiring up to 3 door staff to control numbers, check ages, monitor social distancing requirements and controlling noise in the pub and when leaving.i placed many signs inside and outside the pub including a large 6 ft A Board, wrote letters that were handed out individually to customers and posted many many times on social media regarding the need to leave the premises quietly, be responsible and respectful to local neighbours and the community.

I closed on a Friday and Saturday night well before the required closing time to try to reduce noise, reduce alcohol consumption and avoid issues late at night.

I implemented a strict age verification policy with ages checked at the door by door staff and at the bar if bar staff had any concerns about a customers age. Staff received full training on age verification and covid risk.

I implemented a strict covid policy and adhered as best as I could under the very difficult circumstances to try to get customers to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Humberside police attended and had no issues on a busy Friday night with the covid situation.

I requested Humberside fire service to complete a risk assessment on closing the car park gate to contol numbers and once they had done so, closed the gates on busy nights.

Over the last couple of weeks things have improved vastly as customers had become used to the pub rules. Things had also settled down as numbers had reduced and they would have further as many young people will be going to university and colleges next week.

The powers that be, have reacted in my opinion in a way that has caused the closure of the pub. I myself called Humberside poilce a few weeks ago asking for a bit of support when customers where leaving to try to reduce noise , and was told "no chance."

The" problems" have been increased by the red hawk , and other local pubs closing early or as and when they feel like, resulting in large numbers of customers coming to the buccaneer when these places have closed.i implemented a no entry after 10pm policy at the buccaneer, however this in itself cauaed issues with people trying to get in the buccaneer, and then leaving disgruntled when they were refused entry

Some local resindents have of course had a very good reason to complain. It is of course totally unacceptable that anyone should be subject to anti social behaviour caused late at night and feel uncomfortable in their home or surroundings. And for this I sincerely apologise for the bad behaviour caused by a few customers leaving the buccaneer.

However, the buccaneer has become a target for some locals to focus on negatively, and a target for another local business to slander.

It has been sugested that i personality have been seen to sell drugs directly over the bar.i have apparently been selling alcohol to under age people and many other stupid and to be honest hurtful allegations.

This is of course far from the truth, yet has contributed to and resulted in the position that I now find myself in.

The brough rant and moan platform has been used to slander me , my staff and the pub and has been a very negative outlet for locals to use. I fully accept that the authors of the platform have had no direct input to the problem, however if you call a site, rant and moan, then I guess that's what you are encouraging people to do just that. Rant and moan.

The complaints, negatively, lack of support from "the powers the be", downright slander and vicious sometimes fictional reports and complaints from some locals has resulted in the closure of the pub.

Things were calming down and heading in the right direction, the pub had become a nice busy place with a nice group of manly youger people enjoying a drink and to socialise.

If i am guilty of anything, its been to do my job as a business owner, and employer and have done that with the support of a fantastic team who have worked so hard to try to.make this work.

I am now out of business, me and a staff member who live at the pub are out of a home and 6 people, one who has worked at the pub for 19 years are out of a job.

Everyone who knows me personally will testify that I am a kind caring and generous person who would not behave in the way that certain people have accused me of.

You know who you are and you should be ashamed.!

I wish the next person who takes on the buccaneer every succes for the future and would like to take this final opportunity to thank the vast numbers of people who have supported the pub, the team and myself, many have become friends, and for that i am very grateful.

Sorry to inform you all of this.

I have been informed by Star Inns that Humberside Police are demanding that the Buccaneer will not be allowed to open this weekend. Therfore the pub will be closed Friday to Sunday.

I have asked for an explanation of why they have made this decision and will post their response when and if I get one.!

I have also been informed that they are demanding that the pub is to close at 9pm next Monday Tuesday and Wednesday night.

There is a pettion in place to keep the pub open, this can be found on the Buccaneers face book page.

There is also no intention of putting a temporary manager in to keep the pub open as the Hull Daily Mail article suggests. When the pub closes next Wednesday night at 9pm it will remain closed until a new tenant is found.

It is with great regret that I have been informed by Star Inns, that they are closing the buccaneer.!

This weekend will be the last weekend that the pub is open and it will close its doors, under my ownership on Wednesday next week.

This is due to the alleged complaints from local residents regarding anti social behavior and fighting over the last weekend.! This of course is a complete shock to me as its been a very quite weekend at the pub and I have had no complaints from anyone, or no comments on the Brough rant and moan platform.!!

I am very sorry for the local young people who have enjoyed the pub and made it there place to have a nice enjoyable time and with the great majority being very sociable and have infact become good friends of mine and the staff at the pub.

Please let it be known to all of the younger customers ,that I place no blame on them for the closure of the pub, other forces have been at work here and for that I am very sorry.

I would like to thank everybody who has supported the pub since reopening after lockdown, and be aware that if it was not for the younger crowd using the pub, it would have been closed much sooner after lockdown.

The staff at the buccaneer have done everything possible to offer a nice happy place to socialise and put many measures in place to deal with the current complaints, however it seems that this has just not been enough and for that I am truly sorry.

We will be having a bash this weekend, so please come down and have a great weekend whilst you all can

I will be posting more information about this weekends plans soon.

Regards

John.

Hi all, there will be no admission to the buccaneer after 10pm tonight, we will stay serving customers who are in the pub before 10pm.

This is to try to reduce numbers and keep the noise down for local residents.

Thanks for your understanding.

14/08/2020

Its The weekend!

Please remember that if you are coming to the Buccaneer tonight, entry will be restricted after 9pm and entry numbers limited.

The pub may be closed early if busy to avoid noise issues and complaints in the local area.

Please remember to leave the pub as quietly as possible and move away from the pub area quickly.

Please have a good time, but keep the noise in the beer garden at the rear and at the front to talking level. Please try to respect the local residents and local community and you must keep noise to a minimum when leaving.

Maximum of 6 people are allowed to be sat on the benches at any one time and please do not stand around the benches.

Standing drinking in not allowed in the pub, please be served and move away from the bar and take a seat, if seats are not available inside, please go outside, but keep noise to a minimum.

Have a great time at the Buccaneer, but please remember to observe the above and the advice of the management, bar and door staff.

If you do not you will be asked to leave.
