πŸ‡πŸ·πŸΊ A Midweek Escape πŸΊπŸ·πŸ‡

Last Tuesday, James and I escaped the bar for a bit of research... purely for professional reasons of course πŸ˜‰πŸ»

Our first stop was Biddenden Vineyards for a wine and cider tasting. Thank you to Heather and Colin for making us so welcome. We came away with a few ideas that might just find their way onto our shelves in the future πŸ‘€

From there, we headed to Bexhill where we stayed overnight in a lovely little cottage and, more importantly, finally got to visit somewhere that's held a special place in my heart for years...

Brickmaker’s Alehouse

When I was planning The Royston back in 2021, I spent countless hours researching micropubs and looking for inspiration. I happened upon photos of The Brickmakers' build on Facebook and instantly thought, "That's exactly the sort of place I'd love to create."

Rather than shamelessly pinching all their ideas πŸ˜‡ , I got in touch with co-owner Robin, introduced myself and explained my plans. Not only was he completely fine with me taking inspiration from their layout, he was incredibly generous with his advice and encouragement.

Almost five years later, and with a few CAMRA awards under both our belts πŸ˜‰, it was brilliant to finally return the favour, sit down with Robin and Martin over a few beers and discover just how similar our two pubs really are.

There's a shared philosophy there: quality cask ale, great atmosphere and creating a place where everyone feels at home.

The following day, before heading home, we stopped off in beautiful Rye for a wander around the cobbled streets, a spot of lunch and a couple more cheeky drinks 🍻

A perfect couple of days away, reminding us why we love this industry so much. It's not just about beer; it's about people, friendships and the generosity of those who help you along the way πŸ₯°

Thank you for your hospitality Robin and Martin. We certainly won't leave it another five years before coming back πŸ’™πŸ»

πŸŒ΄πŸ‘• S**T SHIRT SUNDAY – JUNE VOTING IS NOW OPEN! πŸ‘•πŸŒ΄

Thank you to everyone who joined us last weekend for our first S**t Shirt Sunday of the season. A pretty good turnout considering some of you clearly didn't get the memo πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜‚

Kev, Sarah and Bob even joined us by proxy from Spain. Outstanding commitment to the cause πŸ‘πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ We look forward to seeing you in person for the next one on Sunday 5th July.

A special mention also goes to the enormous cheeseboard. Unfortunately, I bought a big wedge of ripe brie a little too early. By Sunday it had evolved from a respectable cheese into what can only be described as a giant cheese pΓ’tΓ© πŸ§€πŸ˜³

Thankfully it still tasted amazing and very little survived the afternoon πŸ˜…

Big thanks to all of you that made a donation for too - another Β£23.50 in the pot πŸ™

Now it's over to you...

πŸ† Vote for your favourite shirt by liking ONE photo only.

πŸ“’ Voting takes place on Facebook only.
If you're reading this on Instagram, head over to our page to cast your vote πŸ‘

The entrant whose photo receives the most likes will win a Β£20 bar tab and secure a place in the Grand Final for a chance to be crowned The Royston's S**test Shirt Champion 2026 and take home the coveted Turd Trophy πŸ’©πŸ†

Voting closes at midday on Sunday 5th July, when we'll announce the winner before the next round of S**t Shirt Sunday gets underway.

Good luck to all our entrants. Looking at some of these shirts, fashion clearly left the building a long time ago πŸ˜†πŸ»

ANOTHER FRESH CAN DROP!!

This time it's two special editions of DEYA Brewing Company's Steady Rolling Man. Their first ever brew, which has become their iconic, core hazy pale ale.

πŸͺ΄Using freshly harvested hops - one with Motueka and one with Nelson.
⭐️Both scoring a shaving off 4 out of 5 on Untappd.

As always, we've got a dozen of each, so be quick!!

Congrats to.... err.... no-one this week!! πŸ˜”

The answer is Tom's Tap - 'Crewe's Control'.

The clues:

Tom and Jerry 'TOM's' 'TAP' dancing

The Knife Angel sculpture created from 100,000 seized blades collected by 43 police constabularies resided in Crewe, Cheshire in May 2023 on it's tour of over 50 towns and cities across the UK as part of its National Youth Anti-Violence Tour.

It's pictured holding an Xbox Control. Hence 'CREWE'S CONTROL'

A bit tenuous I know, but hey, you learned something even if you didn't get the clues!

Anyway, it's a super fruity, double dry hopped hazy pale ale at 5% ABV and scoring a most respectable 3.68/5 on Untappd.

Thanks to Sean for dropping it off... along with the cask of The Mighty Stout, which we'll be tapping soon πŸ‘

Come and grab a pint and start your weekend right.

I'm waiting, ready to serve you till 5pm!!

Cheers

Happy Firkin Friday peeps! 🍻

Let's not talk about the weather this week... it'll only make us sad ☁️😩

Instead, a quick shout-out to our friends at the Brickmaker’s Alehouse, who James and I finally got to visit this week.

When I was planning The Royston, the Brickmakers was one of the micropubs that inspired me most. Rather than shamelessly copying their layout πŸ˜‡, I introduced myself to co-owner Robin, who was incredibly generous with his advice and encouragement πŸ™

It was great to finally return the favour, have a few beers with Robin and Martin, and see just how much our two pubs have in common. If you've never been, it's well worth a visit 🍻

Right... on to this week's mystery cask πŸ‘€

This brewery wasn't even on my radar until I received an email out of the blue via Eddie Gadd, who kindly put one of his brewer friends in touch.

A quick look at the ratings was all I needed 😍

They don't normally distribute this far east either, so this is a bit of an exclusive for Broadstairs and The Royston.

All the clues are there in the picture (albeit a bit tenuous this week πŸ₯±)

Name the brewery AND beer for a chance to win a free pint from the mystery cask πŸΊπŸ‘‡

🍺 First correct answer in the comments wins
🍺 Please enter on either Facebook OR Instagram, not both
🍺 Last week's winner isn't eligible
🍺 Add JFF if you're playing just for fun
🍺 Competition closes when we open at midday

I'll reveal the answer and confirm any winners after I've served the first pint πŸ‘

Have a good one!

Andy 🍻

Firkin well done to Dave Haine (aka Margate Ledge) and James Goyder () on Insta for correctly identifying this week's mystery cask. Come and grab your free pints lads 🍺🍺

Commiserations to Guy Underwood. You were first in with your answer, which was partly correct but you didn't get the full beer name (which I stipulated in the rules).
I'll shout you a pint though mate cos I know you'll be all mardy about it! 🀣🍻

The answer is East India Pale Ale (London 1897).

The clues were all there:
Map of India with the East covered in corn 'Kernel's
A bucket or 'Pale' branded with the word 'Ale'
The slightly tenuous 'London' bus with the roman numerals on the side for '1897'

This historically inspired 5.8% ABV IPA is based on a vintage Fuller’s recipe from 1897, it reconnects the IPA style with its London origins using modern British Ernest hops to deliver notes of hedgerow fruit, soft citrus, and subtle spice.
With an enticing historic bouquet of aromas blending marmalade, toffee, and light earthy spice.

Also currently serving is hazy colab between and and a stout from .

Come and treat yourself to an after-work pint (or two).

I look forward to seeing some of you this evening.

Have a great weekend, and don't forget to wear your s**t shirt if you're joining us this Sunday for our first S**t Shirt Sunday of the season.

Cheers

Andy 🍻

Sadly, it's not looking much better for the weekend either 🌦️

So if it's not beach weather, what are you going to do? πŸ€”
..PUB!!! πŸ»πŸ‘

I've not been behind the bar much lately, so for all those of you who've missed me, you'll be pleased to know I'm working the next three days, starting tonight 😎

You're in for a treat tomorrow too!

The lesser-spotted Melissa will be making a rare appearance and joining me behind the bar, so make sure to keep us busy or she'll slope off home early 🫠

We've got you covered with an amazing cask line-up (when don't we? πŸ˜‰) and this week's mystery cask promises to be the showstopper 🀩

I can't really give you any clues because they're all there in the picture... and it's a pretty easy one this week πŸ‘€

If you're the first to correctly name the brewery and beer (full name please) in the comments below, there's a free pint waiting for you 🍺

PLEASE READ THE RULES
🍺 Competition runs on FB and Insta. Please only enter on one πŸ™
🍺 If you won a pint last week, your entry won't count.

🍺 Free pint is from the mystery cask only, while it lasts.
