ππ·πΊ A Midweek Escape πΊπ·π
Last Tuesday, James and I escaped the bar for a bit of research... purely for professional reasons of course ππ»
Our first stop was Biddenden Vineyards for a wine and cider tasting. Thank you to Heather and Colin for making us so welcome. We came away with a few ideas that might just find their way onto our shelves in the future π
From there, we headed to Bexhill where we stayed overnight in a lovely little cottage and, more importantly, finally got to visit somewhere that's held a special place in my heart for years...
Brickmakerβs Alehouse
When I was planning The Royston back in 2021, I spent countless hours researching micropubs and looking for inspiration. I happened upon photos of The Brickmakers' build on Facebook and instantly thought, "That's exactly the sort of place I'd love to create."
Rather than shamelessly pinching all their ideas π , I got in touch with co-owner Robin, introduced myself and explained my plans. Not only was he completely fine with me taking inspiration from their layout, he was incredibly generous with his advice and encouragement.
Almost five years later, and with a few CAMRA awards under both our belts π, it was brilliant to finally return the favour, sit down with Robin and Martin over a few beers and discover just how similar our two pubs really are.
There's a shared philosophy there: quality cask ale, great atmosphere and creating a place where everyone feels at home.
The following day, before heading home, we stopped off in beautiful Rye for a wander around the cobbled streets, a spot of lunch and a couple more cheeky drinks π»
A perfect couple of days away, reminding us why we love this industry so much. It's not just about beer; it's about people, friendships and the generosity of those who help you along the way π₯°
Thank you for your hospitality Robin and Martin. We certainly won't leave it another five years before coming back ππ»
