Nestled perfectly in the warm belly of Hamilton House, The Canteen emerged in 2009 out of the creative inspiration and collective efforts of a bunch of Stokes Croft and Bristol brilliants. From day one we wanted to offer outstanding free live music, affordable homecooked food made with heaps of love and ingredients sourced as locally as we could manage and moreover we wanted to make a place for all to come, a hub, a hotspot, for it to take on it's own direction and to meet and serve the community that drives it forward. Now serving a totally vegetarian menu throughout the week and amazing vegan and veggie roasts on Sunday! It's generally about celebration, bring it down to the Canteen, and share it out. We love to have you by.

Here's what's coming up:

MON 14TH - Beers and Board Games
Bring a game or choose from our selection, and welcome in the cosy season with a chill night at The Canteen.

TUE 15TH - Latin Descarga Session
Afro-Cuban grooves, Latin jazz and salsa, led by the dynamic house band and opening into a jam session in the second set. Listen, dance, or play - just prepare to be immersed in the energy of the music.

WED 16TH - The Jazz Funk Soul Society
Featuring the JFS house band playing jazz and funk to open, followed by live sax over DJ decks to close the night (extra late at midnight!) - this is not one to miss.

THU 17TH - Rave at Your Fictional Borders
Rave music stripped of all external signifiers: expect genre-transcending groove that seeks to both connect and interlock.

FRI 18TH - The Church of Veg
Celebrate all things green! Our veggie restaurant welcomes this vegetable-inspired musical experience, delivering disco, funk, soul and hip-hop madness. Kalelujah!

SAT 19TH - Head Rush Brass Band
Mardi Gras vibes in Bristol for a funky jazz party, soundtracked by the New Orleans style Head Rush Brass Band.

SUN 20TH - Sunday Sessions w/ Jeeves Biscotti
The perfect way to close out the week, with DJs on the decks all night long. Disco, funk and an ever-entertaining host!

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK: 7TH - 13TH SEPTEMBER

A jam-packed week of live music featuring folk, jazz and brass - and culminating in another of our Sunday Sessions, with DJs all night long!

Here's what's coming up:

MON 7TH - The Singer Songwriter Sessions
A cosy night of contemporary folk and singer-songwriter music, showcasing emerging acoustic and folk Bristol-based artists.

TUE 8TH - The Canteen Jazz Jam
A night of lively jazz, opening with a 40min warm-up set led by Craig Crofton and his trio and culminating in an open stage for all guest players. All welcome!

WED 9TH - Shanghai Shuffle
Let yourself be taken back to the 1920s for an evening by Shanghai Shuffle's fast-paced, heavily syncopated hot jazz. Perfectly complemented by a cocktail or two!

THU 10TH - live music!

FRI 11TH - Bolgna Bridge Band
BBB brings the atmosphere of street parades and celebrations to The Canteen with their unique blend of funk, hip-hop, techno rhythms and brass. Followed by DJ Alcemyth til late.

SAT 12TH - The Makings
Souladelic rock fusion! Expect searing horn lines, rich harmonies and big, bold on-stage energy.

SUN 13TH - Sunday Sessions w/ Good Looks Entertainment
Round off the week with DJs on the decks all night, good company and Sunday vibes.

Only a week to go until lands on The Canteen's stage!

Formed in Bologna, with a mission to 'bridge' (😉) different worlds, people, and musical genres through their blend of brass and percussion. Their style is rooted in the spontaneity of early jazz, but has grown into an energetic mix that amalgamates funk, hip-hop, and techno.

BBB break the boundaries of not only genre but of the stage itself, having played in festivals, streets and squares. We trust The Canteen's crowd won't disappoint them!

Gravity Tuesdays are here... and we're kicking things off with Riddim!

Roots reggae, dub, live jams and £5 Gravity Pilsners? Perfect!

Hosted by legendary drummer Alex Dawson (Hotsteppas / Run Come Down), Riddim brings together Bristol's incredible reggae community for an open jam where singers, MCs and musicians are all welcome to jump in. Expect Studio One classics, Lovers Rock, jazz reggae and heavyweight grooves all night long.

This week sees the return of our dance nights in the form of a new free Salsa dance session as well as a delicious mix of music from reggae and dub to brass pop meets funk, and even a trio of binmen-turned-tin-can-drummer-electro-artistes.

MON 31ST AUG - Board Game Night
Bring your own or choose from our selection!
(Closing early at 8pm)

TUE 1ST SEPT - Riddim
Roots Reggae and Dub session hosted by legendary drummer Alex Dawson. Special guests will be invited to jam with the house band, opening up the stage for singers, MCs and musicians to show off their skills in true Bristol fashion.

WED 2ND - Salsa Dance Night
Our NEW free Salsa dance night! Come learn some moves and enjoy live Latin music from Bristol legends Spoon Lips. Expect the energy of a New York descarga salsa night in the heart of Bristol, and get ready to dance!

THU 3RD - Beat Cleaver Presents: Cypher Space
Beat Cleaver creates improvised beats specific for your vocals! You can request a specific style or just ‘let him cook’. An open mic/live jam hybrid for all forms of vocal skills.

FRI 4TH - Brass Junkies
A dynamic 8 piece brass band inspired by the Mardi Gras sounds of New Orleans. This high-energy, good-time music will bring some carnival atmosphere to the place!

SAT 5TH - The Junkoactive Wasteman & The Tin Can Twins - our pick of the week!
A trio of self-proclaimed junkophilic, electro tin can playing, robo-dancing ex-freelance binmen. Watch contestants wrestle with tin cans and guzzle beans like never before, all in the hope of winning the coveted tin can trophy that’s shinier than a disco ball on steroids.

SUN 6TH - Live Bristol (5pm start!)
Showcasing emerging talent and grassroots artists, providing a platform for a diverse mix of genres and welcoming musicians and individuals from various backgrounds.
