It is with great sadness I must report the passing of one of Charity Chuckle’s regular comedians, Darren Maskell. You may remember him from the Ribena game, his hangers routine, the crisps, the bucket head or even the ice swans that he brought twice to the gig - once by train. He always had me in stitches, but I remember one time I asked if he could end with a gag rather than just wandering off, just this once so he could get the applause he deserved. He did, and he brought the house down.

Rest in peace, Darren Maskell. Thank you. X

RIP Phil Jerrod. We have lost one of our finest stand-up comedians and a good friend to so many of us in the Brighton comedy scene. He’ll be so missed.

I first saw Phil at the Quadrant. He was hilarious and original: a unique comic voice. A revelation really. When you watch a lot of comedy and then see someone so different and so talented, and in your home town, it’s a lightbulb moment. I wanted to book him straight away, to gift him the stage so he could gift our lovely audiences. I’m not sure if Phil even had a pint yet.

I’d also walked out of the same publishers Phil had, so I’m afraid I monopolised his attention for far more than my fare share, but he was such good company: understated, charismatic, fun. It was just so exciting as we rabbited on about comedy and the publishers and music.

He became a Chuckle regular, and a friend. Always accommodating, always turned it on. And kind. And humble. And so talented. He painted Jim Holland’s portrait for me in lockdown 2020 and it is astonishing.

The first poster below is Phil’s headline set at the Brighton Komedia 2015. He liked it so much he asked to take it home. The photo was taken by Ed Moore at Charity Chuckle in the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe. The second poster and Edinburgh flyer display the calibre of comics he was performing with.

There’s no doubt that we would have seen Phil Jerrod’s name in bright lights if he’d not been so cruelly taken from us. He was awesome, a cult classic. We loved him, and I miss him already.

Thank you Phil Jerrod, rest in peace and forever in our hearts.

Lots of Charity Chuckle's lovely comedy friends are up for a vote here, including Romesh Ranganathan, Katherine Ryan Laura Lexx and Tez Ilyas. And if you've enjoyed one our shows at the Komedia Brighton you could always vote for us too in the Best Club Night and Best Venue section!

If you'd rather not, don't worry, the £20,000 we've raised for small local charities and putting on Stewart Lee for a tenner and a tin of beans in an 80-seater is enough for us. ;) xx

5 STARS from this wonderful woman at The Latest! I am totally stoked! "Comedy perfection from beginning to end." Congratulations to all the amazing women on the bill - they were incredible! Thanks to Bridget Christie (the most important voice in our country today - she articulates the AAAAAARRRGH!!! HOW?!!! AAARRRGH!!! perfectly), Julie Jepson, Joanna Neary, Athena Kugblenu, Harriet Braine, Sajeela Kershi, Laura Lexx and Jen Brister. And around £3000 raised for Rise Charity and Survivors' Network too. It is no mean feat, but Charity Chuckle have achieved it: they have claimed the prize for the best comedy night I have been to.
