WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Spellbound is an antidote to all the depressingly identical kitschy 80s nights out there. DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) and JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) ditch the cheese and play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our actual time span is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert our Doomsday, but we’ll spin the odd track outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of people who remember it first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it all as new. Think: post-punk, goth, new romantic, alternative rock, new wave, electro, gender benders, early indie, 2 tone ska, mod revival, synth, blitz kids, oddballs, effeminate futurists and one-hit wonders… Look out for the Eighties visuals on the projections for extra period authenticity. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY! CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK! Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £3.00, exclusively for Spellbound! THE UNDERPANTS SONG! If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a shot of CHERRY SOURZ for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of Cherry Sourz! YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM! Gothic Rock legends The March Violets, who were part of the same Leeds scene as The Sisters Of Mercy and originally signed to their Merciful Release label, are in town on Wed 11 Nov for a gig at Komedia Brighton, and SPELLBOUND's own Simon Price is the DJ (Most likely playing loads of 80s Goth and Post-Punk, plus a bit of 90s Industrial that we never get a chance to play at Spellbound itself).

Last Saturday was the annual SPELLBOUND SYNTH SPECIAL, and HERE'S THE PLAYLIST AND SOME PHOTOS! Seriously, get your eyes around this list of absolute synth-based gold. It was fckng awesome if we say so ourselves.
To be totally honest, we look forward to the Synth Special all year long. It's Jayney's favourite and not far off Simon's favourite as well, and we know a lot of you feel the same way, as advance tickets sold out a long time ahead of the night. There was a big walk-up contingent too, and a really busy dancefloor all night, as happy dancing to the deeper cuts like Vicious Pink and Our Daughter's Wedding as they were to Depeche Mode or Soft Cell. After all these years, we still managed to bring in a bit of new blood, musically speaking, in the form of tracks by Sparks protegee Noel and Junkshop Synthpop discoveries Peta Lily & Michael Process. (Both those tunes are proper bangers, so check them out!). It is, basically, the Spellbound where you're actually gonna hear a John Foxx track that isn't “Underpass”.
We had a technical, to quote the Nume, a couple of times in the first section, but from then on it ran smoothly and was an absolute blast, six hours of bleeps and beats enhanced by a bespoke Synth Special video show which encompassed everything from Delia Derbyshire to Erasure. Thank you so much to everyone who came along and got their synth on. Next one is on Saturday 19 September, and it's a normal Spellbound so, in other words, GUITARS ARE ALLOWED! (Though you know we're still gonna slip in plenty of synth...)
