IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

This will be our final week here at this beautiful space, which has been our home since we first opened in 2020.

As many of you know, back in January we made some changes in an effort to navigate the ongoing shortage of passionate professional chefs in the plant-based world, a cuisine we’ve always held close to our hearts. Ours has always been a food philosophy that celebrates plants in their purest, most natural form, from plant to plate, without anything artificial, no imitation meats, and no deep-fried, ultra-processed distractions.

Now, a wonderful new opportunity has come our way. We’re thrilled to return to being fully plant-based, this time with the addition of a wine bar and wine shop! And the best part? We’re only moving across the road, just a stone’s throw away to 108 Western Road, Hove. Many of you will remember it as our former botanical bar and hydroponic farm from about a year ago.

This move brings us a more sustainable future, with lower rent and business rates, a gorgeous sun-kissed outdoor terrace, and an exciting new concept: seasonal small plates paired with beautiful natural wines. You’ll also be able to take your favourite bottles home, thanks to our new wine shop offering fair and accessible pricing.

The new location will help us manage rising costs, like increased taxes, higher minimum wages, and soaring produce prices, while allowing us to focus on what matters most: continuing to be your favourite local spot for fresh, inspired vegan cuisine.

Our last day at 31a Western Road Hove will be Sunday 8th June. The opening date for our new home will be announced very soon, and yes, it will be this June!

Thank you for being part of our journey so far. We can’t wait to welcome you into the next chapter.

Whether you’re popping in for coffee and cake, a leisurely breakfast, or a delicious lunch, we’re here to make your visit a delight. In the evenings, we transform into a cosy restaurant and wine bar, offering a carefully curated selection of natural biodynamic wines and a menu that celebrates sustainability and zero waste.

From Tuesday 28th January to Sunday 2nd February:
• Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 9am to 4pm
• Friday & Saturday: 9am to 2:30pm & 5pm to 10pm

Dear Friends,

Over the past week, we have been deeply moved by your messages of support – for which we are truly grateful. We’ve also received messages of disappointment, which we fully understand and respect. Since Botanique began, our values have always extended beyond dietary choices. Sustainability, minimal waste, and supporting local, ethical farming have been at the heart of everything we do. When we first opened, our menu was never fully plant-based, as you might remember. In 2022, we transitioned to a completely vegan menu. However, this brought challenges that have become unsustainable. Creating seasonal, plant-focused dishes from scratch requires exceptional skill and labour, and the current economic climate has made balancing quality with affordability increasingly difficult.

We’ve therefore made the hard decision to diversify our offerings to include biodynamic fish and meat, responsibly sourced from local farms. This reflects our commitment to sustainability, natural ingredients, and reducing waste – values we have always upheld. While closing was an option, adapting allows us to keep serving our community while staying true to our core principles. It’s also worth noting that many of our chefs and managers have personally moved away from plant-based diets, embracing a more sustainable and waste-conscious lifestyle.

Additionally, our other vegan restaurant in Brighton, Kusaki, remains a priority and requires much of our focus. Consolidating resources ensures we can preserve its ethos without overstretching.

The past year has been challenging. Rising costs of food, drink, labour, and utilities have eroded our margins, despite stable sales. Thanks to an amazing landlord and ongoing personal contributions from the owners, we’ve kept going, but delays in payments to staff and suppliers became unsustainable and unfair.

Faced with closing or evolving, we’ve chosen to rebuild with passion and dedication. We hope you’ll join us and see how these changes reflect our commitment to quality, sustainability, & ethical sourcing
