BUSINESS RATES "REVIEW"? 🧐
So, the powers that be have finally noticed that business rates are crippling British pubs and hotels…
Outstanding observation! 👏🙄
Now we’re told Andy Burnham’s government has appointed a business rates expert, Jerry Schurder, to lead an "independent review" into how rateable values are calculated for pubs and hotels.
Here is the quick breakdown of what’s actually on the table:
📌 The "Plan": A full review aimed at replacing the current, clunky valuation system with something that reflects actual, modern trading realities.
📌 The Guy in Charge: Jerry Schurder - a veteran rates specialist who has already called for "fundamental reform, not tinkering" and annual revaluations tied to real property values.
📌 The Evidence: The government is opening a "call for evidence" from landlords, brewers, and hoteliers. (Link in comments!)
📌 The Timeline: Schurder reports to the Treasury in March, with potential broader reforms, small business rates relief…and the promised 20% cut for pubs still on the horizon.
Grumpy’s Thoughts:
Don’t throw a party in the beer garden quite yet. 🥳❌
👉 Whilst many are already lining up to call this a "sorely needed rethink," us publicans have seen enough "government reviews" to last a lifetime! 🤬
👉 We don't need years of consultations and fancy reports while electricity bills soar and pints get more expensive to pour!
👉 We need actual, tangible, tax relief. Right now!
Call me a cynic, but until the bill landing on my bar actually gets smaller, it’s just more political wallpaper! 🤷♂️
🏚️ And how many more pubs will we lose between now and March?
What do you think? Is this independent review going to finally fix the broken tax system, or is this just another way to kick the can down the road while more local boozers close their doors? 🧐
