The club was founded by Mr JP Dixon on 27th April 1895 for the people of Marton. Originally primarily a reading and meeting room for gentlemen. The Marton remains a private member club with no affiliations to any organisations, political or religious bodies. In 1895 the Marton Institute site was the only major building and was surrounding by fields. The building fund for the building came from a donation of £500 by Mr James Parrot and a loan from Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank. The people of Marton provided much of the physical labour to build the club, Mr Frank H Gorst provided architectural services and Mr Charles R Hardman undertook all legal works all at no cost to the club. The Management structure is the same to-day as in 1895, i.e. Trustees, Council and Management Committee.
