As mentioned in my stories last week, my first project post 40s is ready to shout about now. The Goat King is a Punjabi nose-to-tail restaurant with specially reared goats and hunted meats in the Jewellery Quarter. The food is exceptional, and I don’t say that lightly.

Here’s a selection of the snacks and starters available, and our Spring/Summer cocktail menu. A very special menu for me, it’s the first time I’ve made drinks inspired by my culinary heritage and I’ve very much enjoyed it.

There’s lots of exciting projects coming up here and with other lovely people, and I’ll be using this page to keep you updated as we go forward.

2024 has no major photos or stories. But it was for me a moment I realised we were close to perfection as a cocktail bar. Not for everybody, but for me. The vibe, the magic, the swagger. It was all there. And that’s when I decided I was going to have to close.

2023 was the year that life affirmed the love that society has and what it means to be a community. Without the help of the bartender community hosting the bar whilst I was unable to walk after ankle surgery we would never be celebrating today. My eternal gratitude to all of the wonderful people and bars that got me through.

Also the year that Joan was being recorded in the JQ. One night Sophie Turner came in for drinks and we took her out to see our favourite haunts in the JQ. Three weeks later she filed for divorce from Joe Jonas. Not saying we had anything to do with it but..

2022 started with a questionnaire that judged your psychological state of mind and provided you with a gin and ended with a guide to everything nice in the city. Also the year I broke my ankle, but more on that later.

2020 was kinda weird, no? Didn’t have getting death threats for serving frozen gin after Birmingham Mail decided they’d take a wide angle zoomed in photo from the other side of the square to make it seem like we were taking the p**s by giving people the chance of a little bit of joy during lockdown on my bingo strike card for the year, to be honest. Oh, the bar also got a sign, finally.

2019. Worlds Best Gin Bar. An award so fanciful that when Gin Magazine told me I should get a ticket for the awards I laughed and told them I’d already decided I was going to India.

Also wrote a book. Won some other awards. Had a great time.

2018 saw us get voted best gin bar in the UK by the gin industry through . To celebrate we updated our gin menu and added 3D glasses for the bants.
