Shaping a new music future for Birkenhead

Future Yard is a new 280-capacity live venue at 75 Argyle Street. This new community venue will bring some of today’s most exciting new national and international artists to Wirral, while at the same time providing key early performance opportunities for emerging local musicians. As well as a venue, Future Yard is an artist hub with basement rehearsal stu

dios and a development programme to help artist members to grow their careers. A number of training programmes are also run alongside all activity, providing key opportunities for young people from the local area to get the first step on the ladder in the live music industry. Future Yard is working towards becoming the first carbon-neutral grassroots music venue in the North of England, and one of the first in the UK. The building is open 7 days a week as a coffee shop, bar, events space and kitchen, with a busy programme of activities.

This week we have a series of shows curated by Turner Prize winner - Mark Leckey.

We’re taking a closer look at today for our FY EYE feature, and on the day their excellent new album has arrived no less!

Speaking on the album, the band says “We found ourselves drawn to the human narratives that define traditional songs. Tales of hardened shepherdess’ and maligned steelworkers, lonely drunks and sailors nearing death. It’s these stranger, often forgotten folk characters that really captured our imagination, pushing us to use the full scope of textures and sounds our arsenal of instruments can create.

The music itself reflects the diversity of styles and influences within such a large band, and the spontaneous approach to arrangement we often took. Be it the punkish drive of Sheffield Grinder or the expansive soundscapes on Raglan Road, we filtered traditional songs through 11 different interpretations altering their form to find their meaning.

In this way the album does not mark the birth of something new, nor the culmination of efforts passed. It is simply a celebration of something that has always been in motion. Long Live Brown Wimpenny.”

Listen to it now and come see them live with us on Sunday 26.07.

Want to take music education in your primary school to the next level? Future Yard is helping schools Turn Up The Volume with an innovative programme that inspires creativity, builds confidence and brings music to life.

This past academic year, over 3,500 pupils across 12 Wirral primary schools have taken part in weekly music lessons, live band assemblies, workshops and school trips designed to inspire creativity and a love of music.

As we prepare for Year 2, we're excited to welcome more schools, teachers and families to get involved. If you're a teacher, school leader, parent, or education professional interested in finding out more, we'd love to hear from you.
