INTERNTIONAL WOMENS DAY 8th MARCH
The theme for International Women's Day 2026 is “Give to Gain.” This theme conveys a powerful message: when society gives women equal opportunities, respect, education, and support, the entire world gains from their progress and leadership. Empowering women leads to: Stronger families.

ROTARY SANTA ‘25 HELPS CHARITIES but NEEDS HELP WITH SANTA ‘26
Rotary Santa last Christmas was a ‘sack’ full of joy and community support. Rotary members heard this recently when Chief Elf John Stamp presented the post Christ ‘Santa Review’.
The Santa Review showed significant community support with donations amounting to £4173 compared to £3286 in 2024.
Donations were received on six community sleigh street routes in Belper and Duffield, six collections at Morrisons, Croots Duffield and King Street, Belper.
There were wonderful occasions of Santa meeting groups children and families especially outside Scout/Guide meetings in both Duffield and Belper.
However it was noted that there were difficulties finding volunteers for both the Santa role, but also the ‘elf’ street collectors, from within Rotary members- CAN YOU HELP WITH SANTA ‘26.
Since Santa ‘25 Belper and Duffield Rotary has made financial grants to:
£250 to Fleet Arts Belper
£1000 to Hope for Belper (foodbank)
£500 to Rotary Cyclone Ditwah Appeal Sri Lanka
£1000 Rotary End Polio Now Campaign.
Funds permitting Rotary grants will continue this year.
A Rotary working group is being set up to plan the outline for Santa ‘26. If you’re 18+ and feel you could help (2-3 hours) as a volunteer for Santa (or Mrs Santa!) or collection ‘Elf’ please get in touch through Facebook messaging or our Rotary website: http://www.belper-rotary.co.uk

A LIFE OF ENGINEERING & CANCER
The weekly Rotary meeting of around 35 members and friends gathered at Belper Community Hall and followed a Club tradition of member life stories as member Mark Redfern used his natural humour to give an entertaining ‘life story’ through engineering to cancer diagnosis, treatment and support.
Mark outlined his teenage years as an East Midlands Judo AND field archery champion followed by a career as an engineer with companies including RollsRoyce and the mining industry. Mark made us laugh recounting his time instructing young people on a council youth employment scheme during the ‘skinhead’ era where a bald teenager appeared with a tattoo selfie of a swastica on his head - but it was backwards as he’d copied it through a mirror. Mark enjoyed meeting people during a short time as an NHS porter. Then to Belper’s GlowWorm and finally testing lubricants at Lubrizol Hazlewood.
Mark retired in 2020 straight into COVID lockdown, his cancer diagnosis, and spending enforced time in the garden and talking to neighbour Tony ‘over the garden fence’ who was also living with cancer. The outcomes of the ‘over the fence talks’ was jointly forming an informal support group, ‘CANCER PITSTOP FOR MEN’ which has gone from strength to strength and this month forming ‘CANCER PITSTOP FOR WOMEN.’
All members showed their appreciation for Marks’ honest and personal talk which made it really interesting.

MEMORY CAFE - THURSDAY FEBRUARY 26th
THEME - CHINESE NEW YEAR
Supported by Belper & Duffield Rotary
Report by joint Organiser Hilary Widdowson.
This week we looked at what Chinese Zodiac sign we were and whether the related characteristics matched our own personality and character. They were surprisingly accurate!
We looked at photos of statues of Buddha and temples and we had Fortune Cookies with predictions, which caused a lot of amusement.
We made Chinese Lanterns with cut out designs encouraging concentration skills and the use of fine motor skills.
We enjoyed coffee, tea ,cakes and biscuits before continuing with our singalong and favourite card Bingo game to finish.
Of course, we always have our group of Dominoes enthusiasts, who play their games, while the others take part in the activity or just enjoy a chat.
Our Memory Cafe is for people living with Dementia and their carers. Please come and join us at Belper Baptist Church, Bridge Street, Belper on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month 2.15- 4.15pm.
No need to book just come along and see what you think. We make no charge, but donations are welcome and the person living with Dementia must be accompanied by a carer/ family member.
We look forward to welcoming you in the future.
