135 YEARS OF FORTWILLIAM GC | 1891–2026
Today, 16th October, marks 135 years since Fortwilliam Golf Club was founded.
On 16th October 1891, a group of local gentlemen met at No. 1 Custom House Square, Belfast, and agreed that a golf club should be formed — the beginning of Fortwilliam Golf Club.
The Club initially played on land between Fortwilliam Park and Parkmount before moving to our present home in 1903, where Cuthbert Butchart, then professional at Royal County Down, laid out Fortwilliam’s first nine-hole course.
Over the following 135 years, the course, clubhouse and membership have changed enormously. Generations have come and gone, each leaving their own mark on the Club.
From those first members in 1891 to everyone who has played, worked, volunteered, competed, celebrated and made friendships here since, Fortwilliam has always been shaped by the people who have been part of it.
Today is an opportunity to remember that history, celebrate the Club we have inherited, and look forward to the chapters still to come.
