There is something historic about McEnaneys becoming the first bar in West Belfast to host a culture of Groves Reilly Corner.
Facing McEnaneys stood the old RUC barracks, a reminder of a difficult past shaped by division, conflict and hardship, but also by resilience, community and hope.
Groves Reilly Corner was named in honour of Emma Groves & Clara Reilly who campaigned against the use of plastic bullets. Their courage and determination remain an important part of West Belfastโs story.
In under two weeks, McEnaneys will celebrate progression through the expression of arts and culture. This will be a historic and unique occasion, bringing people together through creativity, culture and community. It represents how far we have come and how art can help us express our identity, share our stories and create positive change.
The arts give people a voice. They allow us to communicate experiences, preserve memories and explore the many identities that make up our community. Through music, performance, visual art and storytelling, we can connect with one another and create a deeper understanding of the world around us.
Celebrating a range of cultures, backgrounds and traditions is about building a community where everyone feels welcome, respected and included. We have a responsibility to create spaces where people can come together, share their stories and celebrate what unites us.
That is what makes Groves Reilly Corner historic. It honours the past while using arts and culture to express our progress and help create a more inclusive future.
