Meet Dolly ...she is the reason we've had no eggs on the counter for several weeks. This lady and a fellow accomplice decided to do an egg grab. Not content in sitting on just their own eggs they've hatched those of others hens too. We now have Dolly mixtures as evidenced in the results below 😄. Anyway, im pleased to report all hens have now resumed egg laying duty and we have a small stock of fresh eggs back on the counter today.

I've read the posts recently from other small, independent cafés and coffee shops talking about just how tough things are at the moment.

So here's mine.

Hospitality is struggling. Summer in a small town like Bacup can be particularly difficult, people head away on holidays and days out, we're hardly a destination hotspot and, sadly, we can't even call ourselves a market town anymore.

Trade drops. Costs don't.But that's small business. You tighten your belt, watch every penny, work ridiculous hours and keep turning the key in the door each morning.

Then this morning I came to work to discover that someone had stolen our CCTV camera.

Seriously.

At a time when every unexpected expense matters, I'm now having to pay for an emergency replacement camera and installation, an entirely unnecessary cost because somebody decided to take something that wasn't theirs.

And it's not just the cost.

That camera is part of the security of my business. It's the little bit of reassurance I have when I finally lock the doors and go home, sometimes after an 18-hour day.

Show me a self-employed person who works 9–5...

Running a small independent business is tough enough right now without someone deliberately adding another bill, another worry and another bit of stress to the pile.

So yes, I've read the posts from other independent businesses saying they're struggling.

I get it. Completely.

And to whoever decided to steal my CCTV camera, I hope it was worth it.

Because you've just made an already difficult trading period that little bit harder for another small local business. WELL DONE!

☕ A quick update from us...

Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be taking a short break from our usual daytime food menu while we focus on staffing, refining our internal procedures and making a few behind-the-scenes improvements during the quieter summer holiday period.

We'll still have a delicious selection of freshly prepared savoury and sweet treats available on the counter each day, along with all of your favourite coffees, teas and other drinks.

🍕 Our legendary Friday Pizza & Graze Board Nights continue as normal every Friday evening! Enjoy our freshly stone-baked pizzas and graze boards in-house.

🧀 Our graze boards are uniquely ours – carefully prepared using only premium ingredients, beautifully presented, and available by pre-order, for collection any day of the week (Mon-Fri). Whether it's entertaining friends, a cosy night in or a gift, we create them fresh, especially for you!
