March 2013 Wine Column
Chilean wines are without doubt the most reliable wines anywhere in the World! They offer great value, good quality and are able, vintage to vintage, to offer reliability in style and flavour. The only occasional drawback I hear is the high alcohol contents.
Las Ninas vineyard in Chile is owned and run by the Daure family. They are a French winemaking family and in the mid 1990’s they spent time in South America to study the ‘New World’ in regards to winemaking, they returned convinced that Chile was the promised land as far a wine is concerned! They returned and bought land in the prestigious Colchagua Valley. They have made great wine there ever since, always based on the fruit dominated style of Chile but with some of the French elegance and reserve that is their winemaking heritage.
Of particular note is the reds they make made from the grape variety Syrah. The first is a simple easy drinking wine made to show off the black fruit and touch of spice that Syrah has as a grape variety, it is full of juicy fruit and fullish body with a fresh finish. The second is the Syrah Reserva and has undergone some barrel aging, this deepens the flavours giving more richness and adding plenty of spice and vanilla toastiness with a long finish and plenty of structure.
Both wines are on offer this month.

Las Ninas Syrah £8.95 down to £7.95 per bottle

Las Ninas Syrah Reserva £11.50 down to £9.95 per bottle

Feb 2013 Wine Column
Cheap wine that is really good quality is increasingly hard to find, so I am inclined to shout about such wines when they do come along. One particular part of the world that is increasingly difficult to find great value is New Zealand.

The economy in New Zealand has been greatly helped by the very strong Australian economy and this has lead both currencies to be strong against the UK pound. Prices have therefore gone up considerably.

I am very happy to have found a wine with great winemaking pedigree that is both good quality and stunning value.

Fault Line Sauvignon Blanc is made at the Saint Clair winery in Marlborough by their hugely successful "flying winemakers" Alana McGrettigan and Matt Thompson. The grapes come from vineyards planted along an earthquake fault line with has very stony and free draining soils.
Ripe gooseberry fruit with some citrus notes, it has the classic fresh tangy acidity, which is characteristic of Sauvignon from New Zealand. Good balance with ripe fruit.
It is a super wine and with a recommended retail price of £8.95 per bottle it is good value but we are dropping the price to an astonishing £7.95 per bottle for February. Get it while stocks last!
