We are now well and truly into the busiest period of the year for Diamonds in the Community.
With winter settling in, the cold weather arriving and Christmas on the horizon, the workload for our incredible team of volunteers continues to grow. But it’s not just about the number of referrals we receive; the urgency behind them increases too, as people struggle to keep themselves warm and deal with the additional pressures that Christmas can bring, especially for parents and families.
Over the last two weeks, we’ve seen a significant rise in referrals to our Monklands Baby & Family Clothing and Home Comforts service.
Just some of the situations people have come to us for help with include:
• A family whose home had such a severe mould problem that all their clothing had to be destroyed.
• A young mum fleeing domestic abuse.
• A gentleman starting from scratch in a new home after experiencing homelessness.
• A gentleman trying to make a fresh start after struggling with addiction.
• A single dad facing financial hardship.
• A new mum whose freezer broke, leaving her without a way to freeze her baby’s milk.
• A family in bereavement having lost a young sibling.
• A mother restarting in a new home after rehabilitation, with the goal of regaining custody of her child.
• A gentleman in hospital receiving mental health care who needed some clothes simply to be able to get out and walk around the hospital grounds.
• A mum of two fleeing domestic abuse and moving into a new home without any of the basic household essentials.
• An elderly woman whose home had been vandalised and who needed to replace many of her household belongings.
These are just some of the referrals we’ve received in the last two weeks. Behind every referral is a real person or family facing difficult circumstances and simply needing a little help to move forward and rebuild their lives.
And right now, we really need your help.
We are on the brink of having to turn away some requests for basic clothing because of continued shortages in certain sizes. This is something we desperately want to avoid.
CAN YOU HELP?
We urgently need:
Everyday men's clothing in medium and large.
Men's trainers in sizes 9 and 10.
Winter coats for men and children in all sizes.
Please have a look through your wardrobes and drawers. Do you have items you no longer wear or simply don’t need? What might be sitting unused in your home could make a real difference to someone who needs it. Please also have a look at our pinned post for all of the other items we can take.

Mondays: 10am–1:30pm
Wednesdays and Fridays: 10am–2pm
Can't make these times? You can also drop donations into the collection cage at the entrance to Market Square, Airdrie, which is accessible Monday to Saturday, 9am–5pm.
