With three album releases, two national tours, and two awards from Help Musicians, Aspyrian are fast gaining a reputation as one of the most ambitious new acts on the UK jazz scene.

Drawing inspiration from contemporary jazz artists as well as an eclectic mix of soulful songwriters and alternative bands, the London-based trio have crafted a sound that is both captivating and distinctive – blending intricate composition with rich improvisation and immersive textures. Following the success of their acclaimed 2024 release ‘to explore (vol. 2)’ – which garnered thousands of streams and placements on prominent jazz playlists – Aspyrian recently unveiled their latest album, ‘Live at The Jazz Glad Festival’. Capturing the trio in full flight, the recording has been praised by UK Jazz News as “a showcase of Aspyrian’s dynamism as a unit, leaning into the band’s distinct chemistry and improvisational prowess.” Performance highlights include a sold-out show at the 2022 EFG London Jazz Festival, headline appearances at Pizza Express Live and The Jazz Centre UK, and two extensive UK tours. With each new project, Aspyrian continue to push the boundaries of the modern jazz trio – merging genre, emotion, and experimentation into an ever-evolving musical journey.

The unique generation-spanning entity that is QOW TRIO is coming to the Rusty Nail to play music from their barnstorming third album, The Rule Of Three, released earlier this year. Building logically on the natural development of their two previous collections, this time the fearless th*****me can be heard roaming further than ever before into the uncharted hinterlands where the deep jazz tradition of the classic tenor trio format, laden with melody, swing and ventures into the untamed regions of free improvisation.

At the heart of the band is the unmistakable beat of drummer Spike Wells, who this year celebrates his 80th birthday and the 65th year of his extraordinary career at the forefront of jazz in the
UK, providing the driving force behind everyone from homegrown heroes Tubby Hayes to Bobby Wellins to visitors like Stan Getz and Roland Kirk and countless others. Riding at his side to represent the current London-based millennial cohort is saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan, whose intriguing compositions and boundless creative imagination as an improvisor continue to add to his burgeoning reputation. Representing the diversity of tastes and interests and uncompromising creative stance typical of Gen X, big-toned bassist Eddie Myer rounds up the
posse.

Playing with exploration, freshness, precision and the banter of three very good friends, the Ewan Johnston’s trio present a program of original music and chosen covers. Being inspired by groups such as ENEMY, Jason Moran’s Trio and Moses Youfee Trio, the three long term collaborators are fusing the jazz tradition with contemporary sounds and approaches creating exciting and dynamic music.

Ewan Johnston (piano, keyboard/synths)

Christopher Quinn (double bass)

Roan Anderson (drums)

“Ewan’s expression is excellent and vast … Piano touch is both sensitive and bold… a future master of the piano” – Dennis Rollins
