Very sad to read of Timothee Chalamet’s commmets on opera and ballet.

Ballet and opera endure because they compress human experience into disciplined forms where music, movement, language, and silence cooperate to express emotions that ordinary speech cannot carry. In ballet, the body becomes philosophy in motion; in opera, the human voice stretches language until it reaches the limits of feeling. These traditions matter not simply because they are old, but because they cultivate attentiveness—demanding patience, skill, and sensitivity from both performer and audience. Their value lies in how they refine perception, teaching us that art can elevate sensation into meaning.

Popularity, by contrast, measures diffusion rather than depth. Something becomes popular through accessibility, repetition, and social momentum, not necessarily through artistic merit or intellectual richness. The crowd often converges around what is easiest to consume, not what most rewards careful thought. For that reason, popularity is evidence of reach, but not of quality; it tells us how many people encountered a thing, not how profoundly it enlarges the human mind.

Perhaps Timmy should go to the opera and ballet or read a book and learn something… After-all, Mozart, Bizet and Wagner have and will endure… I don’t think ‘Wonka’ will 🤭🥰
