A billboard featuring the face of Anna Dabrowski welcomes outsiders to Benahavís. The roads have been freshly resurfaced, there is a designated pedestrian crossing, and roundabouts guide visitors into the village. Her stage name is Anna Pom Pom. She is Swedish and runs a restaurant. She has lived for years in this enclave of the Golden Triangle. Her face reflects the character of the town: the village is a haven for foreigners. Some websites portray her as a Swedish television star. The large billboard imitates the flamboyant, over-the-top advertising style of the lawyer in the TV series Better Call Saul. It is the quirky, humorous flip side of luxury.
“The mayor? No, no,” laughs Kristi Marshall on the other end of the phone. She is the daughter of David Marshall, a Scottish artist who settled in Málaga in 1968. Since then, his handmade works have become part of the area’s luxury landscape. They decorate the homes of Arab sheikhs and are presented as prizes at golf tournaments.
“He was looking for a quiet village and ended up here. We were the first foreigners,” his daughter recalls.
His gallery is located in a corner of the village known as La Aldea, which was inaugurated by the Spanish Nobel Prize-winning writer Camilo José Cela in 1989, as commemorated by a handmade plaque.
“It’s one of the few truly authentic places left in the village,” Kristi adds.
