-- Founding of Ye Olde Leslie’s --
Ye Olde Leslie’s is a small and exclusive bar – only open to the audience of Aalborg University Shakespeare Company (AaUSC), as well as the members of said company – that is only open during the period of AaUSC’s performance. The bar came to be one fateful day, during the company’s performance of the Shakespearean comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. No one recalls
who came up with the initial idea of building a bar behind the stage, but not surprisingly the idea was immediately vouched for, and the building commenced. Now it is a proud tradition of AaUSC, and hopefully a tradition that will continue for as long as the company still stands.
-- What's in a Name? --
The name behind Ye Olde Leslie’s is deeply rooted in the history of Aalborg University Shakespeare Company, as well as the company’s 2012 performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You see, Ye Olde Leslie’s is named after two small statues that the company owned at that time; both named Leslie. An observant reader might come with the notion that the plural form of Leslie must be “Leslies” and not “Leslie’s”. Adding further insult to injuries, the word ‘Olde’ in Ye Olde Leslie’s is not pronounced “old” – which is the proper way. The same reason why the two Leslie statues constantly were put on the stage during A Midsummer Night’s Dream, despite the director’s initial wish. Because we are pricks that love to tease; and may that part of us never change.
