In September 2019 the LOFT celebrated its 30th birthday, an almost biblical age for an operation of such quality and with such an aura, all started single-handedly, now co-run by father and son. The actual foundation of the LOFT took place in 1986, the same year as the opening of the Cologne Philharmonic Hall and the concert hall in the Stadtgarten. Directly next to the Musikhochschule on Unter Kr

ahnenbauemen Street, an area steeped in history, Hans Martin Mueller (flutist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra and back then a teacher at the Musikhochschule) rented an unused workshop for his workspace and especially as an open forum for music. The location was ideal however some of the neighbours were disturbed by the sounds. Painter Sigmar Polke was one of them and carries the honour of having ended the LOFTs first rent contract with a private agreement. In 1987, after an intensive search, the top floor in the Wissmann Strasse 30 building was found and rented from the photographer Josef Snobl; two years later it was purchased. After extensive renovation and extension the first rehearsals and concerts began in 1988. The official date for the beginning of the regular program in Loft is however September 1989, in this month the first Steinway piano was put into operation. Since that date, concerts (and in earlier days exhibitions) are a regular occurrence in the former Perfume factory. In the course of time, the factory floor became highly regarded as a performance space for improvised, contemporary, and Jazz music, both nationally and internationally. Most Cologne Jazz musicians who have risen to international recognition took some of their first career steps in Loft, representative of these are Nils Wogram, Hayden Chisholm, Florian Weber, Frank Gratkowski, and Paolo Alvares. New Music also found a home in the Loft and the Cologne Society for New Music also choose to make its base in the same building as the Loft, promoting several workshops and concerts. Figures such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, Luciano Berio and Dieter Schnebel gave lectures and visted performances of their works. The Cologne Triennale and the DLF have put on their concerts at the Loft and the Moers Festival has invited the LOFT and its associated scene to five of its projects. The Loft´s own publisher "2nd Floor e.V" supports selected musicians with the release of recording and numerous live recordings have been published on other labels. supports the activities of the Loft since 2004 and with their help over 170 events were able to be realised in 2008. Thanks to the special atmosphere of the Loft, numerous internationally renowned musicians have given concerts there, however the focus of the program has always been the Cologne scene which has received great support here. The Steinway D Grand piano, purchased in 1993, greatly increased the attraction of the Loft. In 1989, Pi-hsien Chen had already performed the entire piano music of Arnold Schoenberg. In 1994, Paolo Alvares presented the complete piano music of Mauricio Kagel and was also involved in the 1997 Cologne Triannale performances of the complete piano music of Karlheinz Stockhausen in the presence of the composer, alongside Majella Stockhausen, Herbert Henk, and Pi-hsien Chen. Prominent musicians such as Steve Lacy, Peter Brötzmann, Dave Douglas, Jim Black, Mal Waldron, Misha Mengelberg, Han Benning, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Evan Parker, Bobby Previte, Michel Godard, Michel Ducret, and Simon Nabatov were all heard in the Loft; the guest list is a real who´s-who of the improvised music world - for this reason the space was never only reserved for experiments and the first steps and productions of the Cologne scene, but also offered its guests internationally acclaimed acts in the program. In 2000 the concert room was renovated and extended, the possibilities for concerts and especially the acoustics of the room were greatly improved. The excellent quality of the studio, set up by Ansgar Ballhorn and continued by Wolfgang Stach, Stefan Deistler and Christian Heck, is alongside the superior concert grand piano (in a class of its own in German clubs) a further reason for the success of the Loft. Numerous live recordings and studio productions have since been broadcast and appeared on CDs. In 2008 the Prize ceremony of the Cologne Jazz Prize, (the Horst and Gretl Will Scholarship) took place in the LOFT. Most of the winners had already performed at the LOFT and produced their first recordings here. Since 2010, the ceremony takes places at the Stadtgarten, since the LOFT could temporarily not meet the structural regulations for fire protection. The final semester concerts of the Cologne Hochschule für Musik und Tanz were carried out in the LOFT for many years (now at artheater), and for long years there was a fruitful partnership with the Rheinische Music school, where each year students of the Jazz and Improvistion departments of the school gave concerts at the LOFT. Alongside all of this, the LOFT also opens its doors to other organisations such as the Cologne Society for New Music, the “Klang Koeln e.V.”, the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft fuer freie Musik, “Drang Klang”, the “Jazz am Rhein e.V.” and other institutions who have all used the premises for their own concerts and presentations. In 2016, the Guardian included the LOFT in a list of 10 of the best Jazz Clubs in Europe:
„10 of the best jazz clubs in Europe“
(Adam McCulloch, the guardian, 02/2016)

In June 2021, the LOFT was voted Club of the Year by the more than 1,300 members of the German Jazz Union as part of the newly awarded German Jazz Prize, which was presented by the Minister of Culture, Prof. Monika Grütters.

Rising Star (NRC) & #1 ‘Guitarist of the Year – Benelux’ (Gitarist.nl Poll Awards, 2026), Ella Zirina is a distinctive voice on the guitar in the Dutch and international jazz scene. Known for her innovative sound, the 1997-born Latvian brings fresh colors and perspectives to the instrument, creating music that engages the ear, the mind, and the heart.
Her journey took off with her debut album Intertwined (2023), created during a residency at BIMHUIS and earning an Edison Award nomination. Since then, Zirina has released four records as a leader and established a strong presence on the international jazz scene. With her trio, she toured across Europe, performing at festivals from the North Sea Jazz Festival to the Oslo Jazz Festival. She has previously performed at the LOFT alongside Pablo Held, and appeared as a solo artist at Colognes Stadtgarten during the KLAENG Festival in 2023.
Zirina brings together a trio of distinctive voices in the jazz world: Dutch drummer Jamie Peet, known for his work with Y-Otis and Jasper Høiby, among others, and Danish bassist Felix Moseholm, based in New York and a sought-after collaborator of Brad Mehldau and Samara Joy.
Together, they focus on Zirina’s guitar-driven compositions, shaped by sound, texture, dynamics, and shifting moods, featuring music from her latest trio album Boundless Blue, Sunset Hue, alongside new compositions.

ERNTE performs work songs and songs from anti-fascist, anti-racist, and anti-imperialist resistance movements around the world.
This time, the group brings together five musicians from Germany and Switzerland – here, they explore the signs of the times through music and poetry.
So: It’s harvest time! It’s high time to sound the horn once more.

Five jazz musicians dedicate themselves to a 20th-century repertoire that, in many cases, was the harvest of their (crisis-ridden) times: songs of resistance, workers’ songs, partisan songs, and battle songs against fascism.

The seeds we sow today and the prevailing global politics may well yield a harvest that is barely palatable—not least in agricultural and food policy. That is why ERNTE, true to the motto “Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind,” plays music with and as a form of protest. (Almost) without lyrics, but with great enthusiasm and everything jazz has to offer: improvisation, unpredictability, energy, transcendence, and a touch of melancholy.

“The goal is to infuse today’s fanfares with a sense of urgency. Four musicians present exactly what gives jazz its extra dimension: intense emotion, infectious enthusiasm, and compelling presence—all of which combine to create an inner glow. This infuses the music with power and relevance and leads to unexpected moments of joy, because sentiment, sincerity, and fervor combine here into a heartfelt directness that interacts with the audience. That is precisely what makes jazz, in its finest moments, something greater.”

Hommage à Theo Jörgensmann (1948–2025)

Klaus Kugel – drums

concert starts approx. 8.00pm CEST

The spirit of Theo Jörgensmann lives on in their minds and hearts; to Maurer, Dell, Ramond, and Kugel, he was a good friend, a longtime companion, and, in many ways, a spiritual father.

Their response patterns, the speed of their communication, and their handling of the musical space are shaped by Theo. His playing experience and positive attitude have shaped and inspired the four musicians performing this evening.
This concert is a tribute to Theo Jörgensmann, one of jazz’s most original musicians.

This music seeks nothing; it does not aim to occupy territory or conquer a market. It is a wonderland of transformations within the smallest of spaces.

„Listening to one another and then immersing ourselves in the group’s sound magically weaves the music forward, a music that at times seems to hang by a thread. Decisions about which direction to take are made in a fraction of a second. What often remains is merely the subtle energy of a homeopathic essence. And so this music seems ethereal, far removed from formulaic music and overly intellectual construction. It is pure music, shaped by the diverse musical experiences of the four performers.“

Shortly before its 50th birthday, Cologne's one and only true wind orchestra grants the heartfelt wish from Berlin: we need to work more and for longer. And Dicke Luft toils away with such civic dedication that it's a genuine pleasure to watch. The first gold star of the year went to Nach oben, the new recording. The ensemble has embraced modern trends while producing a classic full-length vinyl record. The next stop is the LOFT, where Dicke Luft especially enjoys pulling an extra shift. On the programme is the core idea behind the analogue work and the orchestra itself: the joy of ignoring genre and ideological boundaries. The programme is just like the brand-new record – poetic, political, wild, rounded, and beautiful. Anyone curious to hear how Björk, Bonnen, Coltrane, or Miles can be combined with Ernst Jandl is warmly invited.
