My wife Sue, along with daughter Rebecca, are on a whirlwind eight-day vacation to Washington, Oregon and Montana, a combination of sightseeing and visit to my younger visit Thomas who is in a nursing assisted living center home in Vancouver, Washington. We intend for this to be an annual visit, as it is great be spend time with him. Cheerful disposition and easy attitudes are great.

An update is in order on the status of the Seamen's Club Bremerhaven, but not words I wanted to share.

The Seamen's Club Bremerhaven IS CLOSED since 1 November 2020. At this juncture, no idea what will happen next. USS Headquarters has repeatedly said the Seamen's Club would reopen, but I'm not seeing that.

At the direction of USS Headquarters, my 7 1/2 years in Bremerhaven are ended, since the Center has been closed since November 1, 2020. It has been a wonderful experience meeting and knowing you, while serving our tremendous merchant mariners.

I am now transitioning to Florida. You may reach me there at email: [email protected]. Your support for this Seamen's Center at this location since 1954, and before that on Hafenstrasse from the end of World War II has been outstanding. This has been a fantastic assignment.

The Seamen's Club Bremerhaven is continuing its planning for reopening in the not too distant future. Exact timing remains in the hands of United Seamen's Service Headquarters in New York, but we expect decisions soon. Please have patience, and do not despair. Your Sizzler, T-Bone, New York Strip and Ribeye steaks are all on order.

Facebook has an apparent scammer. Our Seamen’s Club Bremerhaven page received an email from a Registry Corporation 1086865590 saying we have violated the rules. Odd notification:

The Seamen's Club Bremerhaven continues its planning for reopening, albeit slower than had been anticipated. I am working with my United Seamen's Service headquarters in New York to work out details of polices and procedures for our reopening. My leadership continues to have concerns about potential problems with the lingering corona virus outbreaks, and is being very cautious. We all hope the hiatus will end soon.

Spring is in the air, as evidenced by the first couple trees on the Seamen's Club Bremerhaven complex bursting into bloom over the past 24 hours. Harbinger of good things to come, I'd hope.

Our expectations of an immediate reopening have not materialized, and I'm now expecting it to happen about July 1st. Lingering concerns about COVID-19 and its new variant BA-2 have my leadership concerned, as numbers are rising in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. My headquarters in New York realizes other restaurants are now open, but is exercising extreme caution.

You'll be the first to know exactly when the Seamen's Club Bremerhaven will reopen.

The latest COVID wave sweeping Germany, with new record highs of 37,000 new cases on Friday November 5th, has led to a new setback for reopening the Seamen's Club Bremerhaven.

The decision has been made with my headquarters in New York that I will not reopen until the beginning of January 2022. Everyone hopes that the COVID numbers will decline sharply in the weeks ahead, but nobody knows for sure.

I am so sorry the Seamen's Club will not be open for the upcoming holiday seasons. As I know more, I'll pass the information along.

The Seamen's Club Bremerhaven remains closed for the immediate future. We are NOT doing outdoor dining or take out service.

Concerns about the Delta Variant of COVID-19 are being discussed by the German government, as well as public polls, and many believe the autumn will bring renewed restrictions and possible closings. Thus, my United Seamen's Service Headquarters and I have had serious discussions on timing for reopening, and decided to wait and see what develops in coming weeks.

I know this is not the answer to "When are you reopening" that you want to hear, but it is fact for now. I will keep you abreast of changes on Facebook, as well as by email to customers for whom I have addresses.

The Gift Shop will not be open. Again, there is no take-out food service or deliveries, and no bier garten dining at this time.

The Seamen's Club Bremerhaven remains closed for the immediate future. We are in July, and understand some businesses have chosen to reopen. With the Delta Variant of COVID-19 still raging, it is the decision from my United Seamen's Service headquarters and me that we will wait and watch to see what is going to happen.

For those who are not following COVID, there are government agencies and polls suggesting 70+% of Germans believe Delta is going to cause a resurgence in coming months and a return to serious restrictions.

I know this isn't the preferred answer to "When will you reopen?" but it is the best that can be offered at this point. We will not reopen, return to a new normal, then have to close again in the autumn.
