In 1818, German settlers from Württemberg founded the village of Asureti (Elisabethtal), building a new life as farmers and craftsmen with Lutheran churches, vineyards, and orderly European-style houses, maintaining their language, traditions, and close-knit Protestant community for over a century, until 1941 during World War II when the entire German population was forcibly deported, families removed from their homes and sent far away with most never returning, leaving behind the church, the houses, and the structure of a village that still stands today without its people.
