TL;DR: Berlin’s independent arts need us. And we need them.
With over 20 years of theater experience, I’ve worn many hats: Designer, Mask Artisan, Audience Services Manager, Fundraiser, but above all, a lifelong supporter and lover of the performing arts.
I moved to Berlin from the San Francisco Bay Area two years ago for a new adventure, and for the city's rich, diverse cultural scene. But Berlin doesn’t hand things to you easily, and I didn’t expect how quickly it would challenge me. A few months in, and deep into my first Berlin winter, I found myself in the middle of a full-blown identity crisis.
Then, almost by serendipity, I was introduced to Fabriktheater Moabit.
This little underground theater, run by a passionate group of volunteers is more than a venue, it's a piece of history, and a space for bold ideas, artistic risk-taking, and creative freedom. But for me, it became more than that. Being part of a theater again gave me a renewed sense of purpose. A community. A home.
But unfortunately, like so many cultural spaces, Fabriktheater is under threat. Public arts funding is being slashed left and right, but unlike back home in the States, individual giving hasn't yet become a cultural norm. But we have to start somewhere, and moments like this can lay the groundwork for lasting change.
As part of our 5000€ Summer Fundraising Campaign I pledged to raise 500€, and thanks to my incredibly generous friends and family back home, I’m only just 178€ away!
If Fabriktheater has ever made you laugh, cry, think, or just feel like you belong, or if you share my love for cultural community, would you consider chipping in a few euros to help me reach my goal?
If you can't donate, no worries, sharing this post is just as powerful. (It’s already traveled halfway around the world.)
And if you’d like, please share what Fabriktheater means to you. I’d love to hear it.
