Coming Monday! Astral Traveling invites Dimitra Zina to present a record that is very dear to her heart and has shaped her on a personal level: Mimis Plessas "Greece Goes Modern"
Almost three years after Astral Traveling started — originally as a genre-focussed series of listening sessions — our return to Rhinoçéros Bar after a little summer break is coming with a change of perspective. Putting in the foreground the personal experiences and feelings linked to music more than a particular style, each of the upcoming sessions will see a different guest present a record that is very dear to their heart and has shaped them on a personal level. Having told us their story around it, we will, as always, listen to the full record in silence on Rhinoçéros’ beautiful sound system before chats and drinks set to a selection of related records.
Having that said, I’m really glad to have a dear friend and musical soul, Dimitra Zina, joining me as a first guest to this new formula. A music lover and worker, DJ and Radio Host hailing from Athens, she will introduce us to “Greece Goes Modern” by Mimis Plessas & The Orbiters, a holy grail of Greek '60s music and one of the country's most sought after records. Recorded in 1967, the album’s mission was to combine traditional Greek folk music with the contemporary sound of the day. The result is groovy and unique in its sound, featuring 10 melodies out of the most well-known folk dances, reinterpreted through psychedelic rock, garage R&B, energetic bossa nova, and hippie-shake beats. The original record was never sold to the public, as copies of the 1967 pressing were confiscated through the years of dictatorship that followed, making this one of the rarest Greek albums of all time.
✨ Free entrance, no reservations. Come early to avoid disappointment and stay late for a chat and a drink.
✨ Doors at 18:30. Start of the session at 20:00.
✨ We ask for silent listening during the length of the main record.
