Urgent Appeal:

Protecting the Lifeline of South Nova Scotia - Digby MV Fundy Rose Ferry

Dear Members of our community.

As the CEO of the West Nova Chamber of Commerce, I am asking you to support our advocacy work to avoid losing our ferry to Saint John NB.

I am writing with a matter of utmost urgency concerning the proposed relocation of the Digby MV Fundy Rose Ferry to the Magdalen Islands.

For the government to not have had the foresight to have looked after the needs of Magdalen Islands is their issues to solve, taking away our ferry is not a solution. The answer is not to ā€œTemporarily ā€œtake away the ferry from NS. (Temporary could be years)

While I acknowledge the needs of the Magdalen Islands and that they need a ferry, it is not fair, reasonable or justified to take the ferry away from Nova Scotia in favor of Quebec. The harm done would be greater to NS that the loss to the Magdalen Islands. This is true by every level of comparison of community requirements.

I would like to emphasize the critical importance of retaining this ferry service in South Nova Scotia, especially when considering the vast differences in Transportation needs, population size and geographical scale.

In the lack of a justifiable answer as to how Transport Canada came up with the idea that it is better to give the ferry to the Magdalen Islands than to server the greater needs of NS and NB, is beyond human comprehension.

Our West Nova Chamber has started a petition that is going viral but needs even more signatures if we are going to get Transport Canada to back off from taking our ferry. We are getting signatures from all over NS and some from NB.

Our voices must be heard and the idea of removing our ferry needs to be dropped immediately, before more of a storm brews.

This idea of taking our ferry is akin to kicking over the proverbial bees nest.

Frankly our government needs to take a long hard look at the fall out if they decide to proceed and take a bull dozer to our economy.

The West Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce is vehemently opposed to this poorly considered idea.
