Confident. Exuberant. Raw. Innovative. Donald Glaude remains one of America’s favourite house DJs.

Born in Tacoma, Washington, Donald’s love for music began at an early age. With an ear for blending music already firmly established, and a love for the energy and soul of musical prodigies like George Clinton and Funkadelic, Donald began to amass a collection of house records.

Together Donald & DJ Dan (R.I.P.) sparked the rave scene in Seattle. Dan convinced San Francisco’s legendary Funky Tekno Tribe to bring Donald to play at one of their parties- where he quickly became a fixture.

Some DJs seek commercial acceptance. Donald has always preferred an emotional connection with his audience. For Donald, house music is not simply a mixed bag of sound, but an experience that provokes the soul.

To Recap…

After our July pride after-party, we knew we had to do it again.  The energy in that room was unforgettable and the performers and crowd all rose to the occasion.  We were able to raise $1800 allocated to the David Tillsen UVIC Pride Award and The Foundry Youth Centre.  With this show we pay homage to the legacy that was so formative to many of us who now work and dance at this space.  Please join in celebration of Q***r culture, of Drag Culture and underground house music, the formative sound of Vogue and Ballroom culture. 

Hosted by Jag Jasman of JagHed Studios, there will be Drag performances curated by the inimitable Henrietta Dubet, joined once more by Eddi Licious and Honey Dewme and featuring newcomer JJ Rabbit.  Without a doubt, there will be another Parade Of The Dolls—where the “best expression” will take home the coins, and of course, we have the DJ’s to make us bounce all night.

Change the Beat returns to The Downbeat on Saturday, September 19 for a full evening of music, education and community, culminating in an all-women club night featuring Sydney Blu (Toronto), DJ Leanne and PureBL!SS. 🔥

Headlining the night is Change the Beat founder and international DJ/producer Sydney Blu (mau5trap, Drumcode), bringing her signature blend of house, tech and progressive sounds back to Victoria. She’ll be joined by DJ Leanne, making her highly anticipated return to The Downbeat, and rising local artist PureBL!SS.

Joeski’s trajectory can be traced back to 1991, when he burst onto the NYC house music scene. He delighted crowds at Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium and NASA, helped turn “Save The Robots” into a NYC afterhours institution, playing alongside the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Louie Vega and Roger Sanchez.

In 2001 Joeski launched Maya Records, and demand for his production has continued to grow, with Joeski producing and remixing on many of the industry’s most influential labels, including Ministry of Sound, Defected, Bedrock, Nervous, Cajual, Relief, KMS, Compost, Hot Creations, Poker Flat, Crosstown Rebels, Dirtybird, Suara, and Desert Hearts.

Fueled by his genuine love of the music and his hard work through the years, there’s no doubt that Joeski has secured his place as one of dance music’s most enduring talents.

We are extremely lucky to be able to welcome Joeski to our space, for an intimate engagement with each other, our space and a legendary figure in House Music.

DJ Boitano has been on our radar for a show for a minute now. We loved his creation, the Zone Mixtape and were always impressed with his on air live skills and selection. But what really got us was watching him rock massive stages- Rifflandia, Philips Backyard, Save on Centre, Laketown Shakedown, Headline spot for Canada Day at the Inner Harbour- Boitano holds the crowd and rocks the party. Combined with Mike Cooper on Drums, this one is sure to pack the dance floor. On top of that we’ve got two of our favourites on support- Peach Delight will be warming the room up , and trust us, she’s gonna have the dance floor primed. Jo Jo Dancer will be shutting it down with the after party vibes B***y, Tech and UKG.
