Aretha is on her way to Vernon! Join us this coming Saturday to celebrate the new wave of Canadian jazz with Aretha Tillotson: band leader, composer, and bassist. JUNO-nominated and 2024 Western Canadian Music Award winner, Tillotson has performed across North America. Blending strong composition with deeply grounded bass work capable of shifting seamlessly from anchoring the groove to front-line soloing, Tillotson showcases original music rooted in Western Canadian ideas and landscapes and contemporary jazz language, brought to life by top-tier collaborators.

Don't forget, the Vernon Jazz Club is a 19+ venue with a concession & bar.

The Vernon Jazz Society is looking for a few people interested in joining our volunteer Board of Directors. We’re a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit organization that has been bringing live jazz to Vernon since 1999. We have a great crew of volunteers who pitch in to make our concerts happen. What we need are a few more folk who enjoy looking at the bigger picture, and can help our organization move into the future.

We are looking for people interested in three roles:
Treasurer – Our bookkeeping will be outsourced, so this is more about monitoring our finances, building budgets and financial reports, and making sure we are on solid ground. Financial experience or confidence working with budgets would be an asset.

Volunteer Coordinator – We need someone who enjoys working with people, is well
organized, and can help recruit and coordinate the volunteers who run each show. Experience managing or organizing a team would be beneficial.

Communications Director – Help promote our club and its music through advertising, social
media, email newsletters and other community channels. If your background includes writing, marketing, or social media, this might be for you.

You don’t need to have volunteered with us before, and you certainly don’t need to be a
jazz expert! We’re looking for people who care about live music, enjoy planning, and would like to contribute some of their time and skills to support a community arts organization.

Fierce, feisty and fabulous: that’s the music of bassist, bandleader
and composer, Aretha Tillotson. A rising star on the Canadian
scene, Tillotson earned a JUNO nomination in 2025 for her second
album, “Kinda Out West”, a collection of original tunes that carries
forward the tradition of the cordless quartet established by Sonny
Rollins and Ornette Coleman:
“Kinda Out West presents modern compositions that bear the mark
of deep admiration for old-fashioned ideas. Aretha Tillotson takes
on the tricky task of fusing those two ends of the jazz spectrum with
freshness and fire.” (UK Jazz Journal).

Tillotson has shared the stage with outstanding artists such as Kris
Davis and Ingrid and Christine Jensen and is the recipient of a
Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year (2024)
and a presidential scholarship to Berklee’s prestigious Global Jazz
Program. In addition to her work in jazz, Tillotson often rocks the
electric bass in musicals such as “SIX” , “The Ballad of Johnnie and
June” and “Come from Away.”

Join us for a high-flying musical conversation with the Aretha
Tillotson Quartet! Tillotson will be joined by Feven Kidane on trumpet, Daive Laing on drums and Donny Kennedy on alto sax.

WOW!!!
What a way to open our season! The WALL of sound and presence and talent this group generated was truly outstanding! 🥁🎤🎹. These musicians live and breathe this music and it was obvious to the sold out crowd. We sang, we danced, we laughed and Montuno West conquered our hearts. 🕺💃

A Juno nominated jazz saxophonist with decades of professional international experience, over 30 recordings, and a dynamic and engaging stage presence, for this performance the Quartet plays a mix of originals and classic jazz repertoire.

The Downtown Vernon Association kicks off the start of Summer, with one of Vernon's most iconic events...
The 32nd Annual Sunshine Festival!
As six city blocks in Downtown Vernon, are transformed into a vehicle-free playground for children and adults.
Speaking of vehicles: it's FREE PARKING DAY, all meters are free (on June 20th).
The 32nd Annual Sunshine Festival is a FREE event, that takes place from 10am-5pm on 30th Ave.
This festival will showcase our own downtown businesses and a some outside vendors. Play games, meet mascots, listen to live music, find new treasures, eat, dance, shop and so much more!
**We have some NEW SURPRISES in store for you and the kids!**
Grab the squad and bask under the Okanagan sun (or cloud) with these attractions and more, sprinkled throughout the event.
- The Food Zone consists of food trucks, picnic tables w/umbrellas, chairs under a large tent, the main stage for bands (on every hour from 10am - 5pm) and more. We will also have food vendors throughout.
- Children's activities can be found in The Kids Zone (the 2900 block). Find Games, Music, A Reptile Show, Face Painting, Balloon Animals and more.
- Countless vendors and eateries, plus food vendors throughout 30th and so, so much more.
