This weekend I was up at Backwoods Breakaway - Tignish as the rink was hosting the Rt 2 Success Training Harvest Classic this weekend and boy, was it a fun weekend!
At one point someone let us know that there was a bit of a mess in the dining room area so I grabbed a broom and got to sweeping. One of the customers made a joke like "Oh the boss is doing menial labor!" It made me laugh and it got me thinking about how much I enjoy working in the business.
These days, most of my work happens behind the scenes, so I don’t get to jump onto the floor as often as I’d like. But whenever I do, I’m reminded how much I enjoy being part of the day-to-day.
For one, I get to better understand what I am actually asking of my staff. Is what is expected of them actually reasonably possible? Does it require more support? A new tool? A system?
I always leave each shift with my head buzzing with ideas of how to make things easier, clearer, more streamlined. I LOVE when I can solve a problem that makes my teams lives easier. It's like my biggest work high!
Another reason why I enjoy when I get to work 'in' the business - work has a very clear beginning and end point - I generally feel pretty accomplished and have an easier time logging off and enjoying my evenings, guilt free! A night free from worrying about 'doing enough? I'll take 2, please!
So, how did I feel about the comment the man made about the boss doing menial labor? I took it as the highest compliment! So, thanks sir, you made my day!
