Kitchen Party: Hannah Green and A Glimmering Girl

"October 26th at 9:30PM is the first edition of Kitchen Party; a monthly performance series showcasing Atlantic Canadian musicians, songwriters, and composers living and working in Toronto. Our first show features Newfoundland’s Hannah Green; an alternative singer-songwriter known for blending folk, indie, and ambient elements. Having toured internationally, Green has built a reputation for immersive performances rooted in emotional honesty. You’ll also hear from A Glimmering Girl; the project of Canadian songwriter and poet Ruby Fleet. Her work traverses allegorical explorations that distill emotion into its most basic recurring components. She believes in the practice of performance as a means to the liberation of human spirit. Your host is Newfoundland-born songwriter Jessica Spurrell, who will open the night with a few songs of her own. Join us for this memorable evening of storytelling, lyrical craft, and community celebration.

Kitchen Party aims to shine a spotlight on the Canadian East-Coast, demonstrate the breadth of creativity from this region, and strengthen community ties. This series features different artists each month from Newfoundland & Labrador to Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick too, working in traditional, contemporary, and experimental practices. Do you crave satisfying communication? Join us as we consider the value of person to person connections that happen in real life. The challenge we face in an increasingly digital world is to find a balance between our actual relationships and the screens that surround us.

October’s Club Night will begin with a video featuring Brian Faherty, followed by a guided conversation.

After that, we’ll tune in to the Municipal Election Returns. What could be more real time and community than that!

And as always, there will be snacks and games… and delicious beers from the Southern Cross! Everyone is welcome!

"The Toronto Shape Note Group is holding a Sacred Harp song book singing at 1:45pm. Everyone is welcome to participate and sing as we sit together around a “hollow square” with a side for tenors, trebles, altos, and basses. Each song starts by singing the “shapes” Fa, Sol, La and Mi. Then we sing the poetry (lyrics), written between 1700 and 2025. Themes are spirituality, our lives, our deaths, our struggles, and the world around us.

There’s no audience—it’s not a performance. We sing for each other. Each singer, new or old, can choose a song from the book to lead, or have help leading. It’s loud. It’s not perfect. We welcome everyone who wants to sing, no matter what faith, sexuality, or politics, and support each other as we form harmonies together.

A quick introduction to shape note singing starts things off. Then we sing until 4 pm, with a recess in the middle. Loaner songbooks are available for the singing (or can be purchased). There is no charge to participate, but donations are welcome to help cover rent.

The group holds monthly Sacred Harp singings on third Wednesdays at Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue at 7:30 p.m., and more occasional house singings from similar books. Check out all this at torontoshapenote.org or facebook.com/groups/torontoshapenote for details or email [email protected]."

Come connect with fellow Toronto musicians for a chill open jam at Tranzac Club. We’ll be playing through cover songs! It’ll feel like karaoke but with a band - and you can be in the band too!! We have space for singers, guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players & other instruments are welcome too. We'll have microphones, amps, drum kit, and a keyboard - please bring your own instrument!

The Originals - Sam-r with the Greatest Band in the Land Saturday October 24th, 10pm-12am

Sam-r kicks off his monthly residency at the Tranzac with Originals, a night dedicated entirely to his own music. A Toronto-based Hip-Hop/Blues artist of Lebanese-Syrian heritage, Sam-r raps while playing live drums, telling honest stories of resilience, culture, and community. This first night is the foundation: his original songs, played the way they were written. From here, each month of the residency takes these songs somewhere new, reworking them through different styles and sounds. Come hear where it all starts before the experimenting begins.

George Elliott Clarke is the Guest Host for Minstrels & Bards and will be presenting ‘5 Poets Breaking Into Song.’ A tranzac-transcendent evening of ten jazzy, operatic, arabesque, bluesy, funky and soulful poems set to music by commissioned composers performed by pianist Narmina Afandiyeva and vocalist USHA (Neoclassicism Don’t Scare Real Jazz Composers!).” Poets Allan Briesmaster, George Elliott Clarke, Brenda Clews, Luciano Iacobelli (1956-2022), A.F.
